Default Transmission tower climb

Hi, A friend sent me this link. It's a video filmed from a head mounted camera on a Technician climbing a 500M+ radio transmission tower. If you don't like heights, fasten your harness 1st!

Regretfully, that doesn't appear to run here. Is there some special s/w that I need on this PC to see it?

Hi Al

What browser are you using? It should run in your browser.

Anything more than 12ft off the ground, i start to worry!

Thanks for posting that Les-fairly amazing. A very well produced and voiced video with clarity for the non technical and they resisted the temptation to have Rolf Harris on the sound track as well. I'm not very good on heights myself but I can sometimes manage some things-Dungeness Lighthouse outside gantry is about my limit-with difficulty.
There was a recent Grand Designs where the presenter went up a water tower but was in real distress on the outside deck. The video of that did make me a little shaky.

Watching through the view-camera here didn't induce any desk vertigo but I don't fancy a go. Even if you somehow managed climb the T Tower [perhaps by steadfastly NOT looking at the view] that last bit where you have to go up and over to what? replace a bulb? is the real er, killer! It reminded me of the outside ladder situation where you might have to go up and over a gutter or come back down that way-pretty much impossible for me.

I did once go up that very tall tower in Toronto with a sheet of plate glass in the floor of the viewing room but didn't find it a problem. You were so high up that it felt unreal [literally] far removed from everything [ie no scale] and you were insulated inside the building as well. Not like that bendy tower/mast. Given all the lightning protection, I did wonder about the shiny metal watch he was wearing but I suppose if your free climbing anyway!
Interesting that the guys seem to have defeated Health and Safety concerns, perhaps by the arguement that the increased fatigue from constant clipping was more dangerous. It would be interesting to study why some people can do that sort of thing and are apparently immune from the horrible fear and nausea the rest of us would experience.

It does now - following a defrag. of the HDD.

But I could not see it through to the end. I suffer from vertigo - so I guess that that is one employment opportunity that I'll have to pass by. I'll settle for being his mate . . . down on terra firma:
"Left a bit - bit more - stop there. No, that's worse - try the other way. That's better. Can you go up a bit? The pic's. gone a bit fuzzy now. Go back to where you were . . . ."

Remember when?

Hi,
I saw this video sent to me from a friend. Amazing!
There was a tribe of American Indians who have absolutely no fear of heights and worked on skyscrapers in New York. They could walk along a four inch wide girder high above the ground without any trouble at all. I wonder if those guys were related to that tribe?
Cheers & Happy Christmas, Pete

I saw this video a few months ago, apparently the climbers have to sign a waiver to allow them to 'freeclimb' without constantly using a safety harness.

Hi all,

I downloaded this one last month when a friend sent me the link to it.

The height is one thing, but the first thing that popped into my mind as he climbed was, 'Oh yes, I am really going to trust those small bolts to hold my weight while I climb this!'

The 2nd thing that popped into my head was, at that height, why not a parachute?

Risk compensation, when you feel safer you behave more dangerously, look at ABS, seatbelts, crumple zones etc. haven't done a thing to reduce accidents.

I've lost count of the times I've seen this video, and every time, I feel like I'm suffering from Acrophobia, and I'm not even up the blummin' thing!!!!

As for downloading it, if you're using FireFox, just go to Tools->Add-ons and search for "Embedded Objects", this'll allow you to download most Flash-based videos (Youtube, iPlayer, Blip.TV and similar) in "*.flv" format, for free, no restrictions other than what the video hosts apply...

Goodness, that's quite a climb.

The question does spring to mind though at some points there - could the designers have made that thing harder to climb if they'd TRIED to? Given that it's designed with access in mind, you'd have thought that there would be at least a few decent grab handles and the likes available at various transition sections. That bit where he has to clamber around the tuner would make me nervous even climbing into my loft...
