Default 1154 coloured knob material, and best cleaning method.

Hi all,
Can anyone advise best method of bringing the knobs back to colour? I'm not sure what material they are. I've tried soap and water with a scourer, but they seam to have the remnants of a lacquer on them, or the surface haste aged and discoloured.
Many Thanks
Chris

Nothings too big or too heavy, otherwise it wouldn't be where it is!
