Are you serious??

Soldering's a bit of an art, but one that's well worth mastering. Maybe time for a new thread??

Good luck,
Nick.

I agree. There must be other forum members who are not confident at soldering, so it's worth discussing.

This site is the definitive work on soldering

That should keep you busy for a while

The old trade test for soldering:

take 12 pieces of solder, 1" long, and using your iron, form them into a cube.

This should keep you amused, or frustrated, for hours (icould do it when I did board level repairs all day everyday, but I may struggle a bit now )

Jim.

There's one thing for sure, it doesn't matter how many years you have been soldering...you still burn your fingers regularly on your iron. Did it again yesterday. Someone at the workshop had trouble lighting a gas iron, then I tried, didn't realise I'd succeeded in lighting it, and proceeded to touch the bit to prove it wasn't lit.....

Stupidest thing I ever did years ago was burn my face on the soldering iron.

How you may ask,??

I used to smoke in those days. I used to use my TCP to light a fag when I didn't have a lighter to hand. One day I missed.

Never did live it down in the workshop.

I have heard stories from people at the Steam Museum I voulenteer at about welders they worked with who used to light their cigarettes from an oxy-acetelene welding torch!

I saw a 1970s-era picture of a man working on some equipment. He's got the iron up to his nose; apparently sniffing it to make sure the iron's at the right temperature.

These things do emit a bit of a smell when they finally get hot. It just looked weird.

Yes, the nose is surprising good at detecting temperature.

Getting OT now, so I'll shut up
