Osram Music Magnet 4
Hi All,
I've been given a vintage radio by my son as a birthday present. He says the guy that sold it to him insists it works. Well maybe, but I have no information as to how to connect up the batteries, antenna and speaker because I do not have a diagram showing me what all the screw terminals are at the rear of the set. Does anyone have access to anything approaching a user manual for this radio. I've found a circuit diagram with a brief description in German but's more of a general guide to it's performance than a technical handbook. Cheers all. Jomacot. |

It's quite possible you will not have the skill set for this early receiver Jomacot.
You can access threads on here via "search this site" above eg "Osram 4 Music magnet by tigger" 10/7/12. These should give you an outline of what may be involved. Hope that helps. Dave W |

Re: Osram Music Magnet 4
Back then there were no operating or service manuals. You got the build instructions on full size sheets, that's it. Radio was for the practical enthusiast, likely as not a member of a radio club.
There are two versions, the Music Magnet and the New Music Magnet, to make sure which one you have could you post a picture of the inside with the lid up. Either way, you will need several batteries. A 2 volt accumulator, an HT battery and a grid bias battery. As Dave says, the search box above will be useful for research. No plug and play in the 20s unfortunately. Oh, and a long wire aerial, but that can come later. |

These are pretty simple sets. Can you post a picture of the bits you have and maybe we can help.

Hi you will also need a high impedance loudspeaker failing that you can use a low impedance speaker from a valve set, but with its matching transformer.
The basic kit set was just that, and you needed batteries, valves and a speaker and aerial to get it going. I have some of these sets and they will operate well on local stations. Ed |

I agree with #2. This will be a challenging radio for a beginner, and there's not a lot of stuff to listen to on the AM broadcast bands anyway. Maybe it would be better to treat it as a static exhibit?

Re: Osram Music Magnet 4
Thanks all for the excellent info. It may well be that it ends up as an ornament but initially I will try to get it working.
I have added two pics of the beast. Incidentally, I have seen a rather battered one in an antique shop and it had a flat battery clipped to the right hand side, the pics show the clips on my one. |

Re: Osram Music Magnet 4
Definitely a New Music Magnet. The flat battery is the grid bias battery, inside because they last a long time as there is no drain from them. The 2 volt accumulator and large HT battery would be hidden away, possibly in another cabinet.
There are several threads on here (use the search box above) and quite a lot in other sites. If you pull off those aluminium cans there should be a valve under each one. Do you have any test equipment, primarily a multimeter? |

Re: Osram Music Magnet 4
Thanks, Yes I have both digital and analogue meters.
I downloaded the info from the link from ms660 which was great but still need to identify the screw terminals though so will study and see what I can deduce. What voltage is the HT battery? |
