Silent Key Sale
I've just visited a friend whose husband died recently. He was a very quiet chap: I know her well, but hardly knew him. He had a shed in the garden where he "dabbled", as she put it.
She's asked me for advice on what to do with his "radio stuff" in the shed. Her inclination was to order a skip, but I think I've persuaded her not to do that. I've made a list of the stuff I could get to in the shed - there's a lot more, which I'll look at on a subsequent visit. There are also all kinds of tools, spares, and the like, too many to list. I've no idea what to do with it, so I've put the list on my website at http://jillings.org/RayList.pdf If anyone's interested in any item, please send me a PM or an e-mail from here, and I'll talk to Mary to see what we can arrange. Location is just north of Ipswich. |

Re: Silent Key Sale
Don't forget that BVWS runs regular auctions, which can either be on a (10%?) commission basis or all proceeds to BVWS funds. If you wish to pursue this line, have a word with Mike Barker.

Re: Silent Key Sale
Quite a lot there, almost an auction in itself. If no-one wants the considerable work involved in utilising eBay, the best way to benefit his Widow would be to contact Mike.

Re: Silent Key Sale
Seconded - that's a comprehensive and VALUABLE collection. For the sake of the widow this should not go without proper compensation.

Re: Silent Key Sale
Thanks all. No, it's not going on eBay. There is some more, not on that list. I'll probably be seeing Mary next week, and will try to list the rest of the shed.
I'll contact Mike to see what options there are. An auction would make sense, I think, since I have little idea of the value. I've had some PMs expressing interest in some of the items, which will reassure her. I can't see her or me packing stuff into boxes to ship around (she's in a wheelchair, and I'm past the first and second flushes of youth). |

Re: Silent Key Sale
Hi Keith, if there are any tech books or older magazines they would also be worth listing as there is now a dearth of such material in bookshops.
Feel free to PM me if you have any queries Ed |

Re: Silent Key Sale
I've not seen any tech magazines so far, but there are cupboards and drawers yet to open.

Re: Silent Key Sale
Keith,
That's a very impressive list. There are many attractive and valuable things there. If his shed is average, there will be lots of small things, tools, components, spares and these too have value, and are sought-after to an extent. If your friend has no interest in the stuff, then she gets to choose what the proceeds get spent on. The grandkids? a holiday? a bench in the park? who knows? but there is also the knowledge that the things have moved on and are being appreciated. It certainly beats landfill. If you look in the recent posts, someone has just had a guitar/PA amplifier in to repair and it turned out to be a very early prototype and has been valued at £30,000 by Marshall, the makers. OK the chances of that happening are vanishingly small, but the chances of a number of innocuous looking small items being worth more than you'd expect are good. You should find help on here and from the BVWS. David

Re: Silent Key Sale
You can't help wondering how often the 'skip solution' happens without us knowing anything about it.

Re: Silent Key Sale
My guess is a minimum of £1000. The HP signal generator is £200+.

Re: Silent Key Sale
The Icom R8500 seems to get offered at £800-1000, so £1000 overall might be a bit conservative.

Re: Silent Key Sale
The price for IC-R8500's is not as high now as they used to be now that, I guess, good SDR recievers are such good value.
Yes they used to reach £1000 for good ones, and very good ones (perfect condition in original boxes etc.) could go over £1000. Now £500 to £800 seems to be the price range. Just bought a good one with a small scratch on top panel for £600 (no box!). These are amongst the best "amateur" "black box" reciever's available, but SDR has changed the game. Peter G0RSQ
