Hi Julian, quite a few nice radios mentioned there.
Murphy/ HMV/ Marconi of British manufacture through the 30's have some substantial sets among their ranks.

If you can go to Golborne on 11Nov, the BVWS meeting/ sale you should see some nice examples and be able to chat to fellow enthusiasts; with luck you could get a set you like and find someone to fix it all for the amount you mentioned.

The 1930-1939 "Radio Gallery" on Jonz Valve Page has a range of radios shown together with for some, a brief description and review. It includes the Pilot but in table top form.

Might help you narrow down your search.

Unfortunately, most of the links in

https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...ad.php?t=10510

are now dead, so the ugliness is moot!

That's why we prefer them to be hosted here, the size limit is not a problem for such posts.

Thank you all for your advice, I'm really grateful for your help, I'm now going to spend a bit of time reserching the ideas and models you've mentioned.

Maybe see you at the swap meet ?

Thanks

Julian

I'm more into compact radios but I must admit that the Pilot U-106 is a pretty impressive looking set.

Hi Julian, yes see you there. Many of us wear name badges so we should be easy to identify.

Probably the grandest British radio from the 1930s is the Murphy A40C.
The radiomuseum example doesn't show it to best advantage.
https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/murphy_a40ca_40.html

but it is a very impressive set (and has a magic eye of course) and they do come up for sale now and again.

A wonderful radio without many UK rivals, but I'd expect a presentable unrestored example to cost most or all of Julian's £200-or-thereabouts, and professional restoration of so elaborate a receiver would add several hundred to that.
