I have just tried to pick up the oscillator with the use of a second set and was not able to pick it up. Does this mean one or both of the EF89's are duff or that the wave change switch is stopping them from working ?

No, the EF89's are OK. The faulty valve is the ECH81. You could try plugging a replacement in to see if this cures it.
Check C35, R8, C24, C27, R9. C31 and R10. (Trader sheet.) This is the oscillaor side of the ECH81. Also check that the tuning cap isn't shorted. (Bent plates). Cheers, Steve P.

Measure V3 pin 8 when switched to AM first...This is the oscillator anode and when last measured it was 0.
