What have I bought ? Cadet ll ?
This leather cased item has a shoulder strap. The only clues are what is on the lid. The dry cell battery is rated at 240v, to be discarded at 180v.

That sounds spot on McMurdo.
Courtenay were/are? suppliers of studio lighting and other kit for pro photographers back in the day. I had a set of Courtenay Photofloods back when I was a keen amateur photographer. A. |

Thank you Kevin, that was a quick reply. A. I had looked it up on the net but could not find anything relevant.
I don't think I have seen a 240v battery. John. |

Re: What have I bought ? Cadet ll ?
The flash heads held a xenon flash tube and a large capacitor (and a trigger coil -camera flash contacts were high voltage jobs in those days. These old flashes will cremate modern cameras!)
The battery packs were more dangerous than you'd think, because of the current available backwards from the capacitors in the heads. For efficiency there were no bleeders. Mecablitz did packs with vibrators and Sonnenshein lead acid batteries David

Re: What have I bought ? Cadet ll ?
I'm a bit disappointed, I thought it may be test device. It has this 240v battery of which I have never seen one before. I've not made any volt measurements on the battery yet but will be, and shorting the caps at the 3 pin connector. I notice that the connections to the switch and 3 pin socket are not insulated and easily touched on lifting the lid, I suppose one belt from it and one would be extra wary.
