Unlike most inventors inventions his wind up radio did (and still does) good. I hope the media repeat some of his interviews/programmes, great chap.

I have a rechargeable battery type of wind up radio, doesn't take much winding for an hours worth.

Very sad-this is the sort of chap that should have been Knighted as a proper and worthy example to others, not just a CBE. It's striking and significant that he never became rich. Featured in an affectionate piece on PM [Radio 4] today. His business partner said that he made some money from the Radio but other manufacturers then used spin devices that didn't require a spring so there was no patent protection. The last I heard he seemed to be losing his home on Eel Pie Island. That wasn't mentioned on the Radio and the Mail article suggests he was still there at his death. Journalism seems to miss the obvious these these days or perhaps it's all too difficult? like "What was the purpose of your journey before you got stuck in the snow?"

Met him at an RSGB do in Edinburgh where he was the guest speaker. He was a very decent guy. Down to Earth, thoughtful.

In the video I like the way he describes a wind-up gramophone as 'making a lot of noise by dragging a rusty needle over a piece of shellac' giving him the idea of the wind-up radio.

I met Trevor when I interviewed him for an article for Technology @ Home.

A very decent chap who loved his work.

What happened to him regarding his patent illustrates how you need a lot of money to back up and enforce patents.

Receiving the CBE and not a knighthood shows once again that engineers in the UK are undervalued in society.

Being knighted in technology and engineering is now unknown. I've known Dave Payne at Southampton University since he was a research student in the early 70's. He is now Professor Sir David Payne. And the Oxford academic that founded Oxford Instruments (where I worked for several years) is Sir Martin Wood.

But they are the only ones I know, that have been knighted.

Very sad, particularly as he didnít get the full recognition he deserved.
I agree engineering just doesnít get the status it should have. When I see who gets a knighthood for prancing around on stage and yet a brilliant engineer who helped many people in poor parts get a CBE it says it all!
Cheers

^ I totally agree.

As I said, they do exist, but in a tiny minority, and usually once they became a political academic or a captain of industry.

Sad news, I remember there was a very good documentary about him inventing the clockwork radio & getting it into production.

Does anyone remember the advert combining footage of him with Frank Whittle?
