Question 65N7GT equivalent?

A friend of mine gave me and Advance J2 oscillator which, after reforming the electrolytics and replacing a dodgy looking Hunts cap, works but the output is distorted. I tracked it down to the oscillator valve which is a 65N7GT double triode. I have scoured the internet but I can find no information about it or anybody selling one. Does anyone know of an equivalent or where I can get a replacement.

Tim,

The valve is a 6SN7GT and the equivalent is ECC32.

Nothing fancy, any double triode with 6.3V heater will probably work.

Regards,

I think you mean 6SN7GT, Quite common with equivalents 13D2, B65, CV1998.

No wonder I couldn't find it. I must need new glasses, it sure looked like a 5 to me. Thanks for a quick response.

ECC82 / 12AT7 would probably be fine- even with the adaptor you'ld need to avoid modifying the chassis it would be about the same size.

Having seen what price 6SN7GTs go for on ebay an ECC82 may be a good idea.

Wilson valves or Langrex may be able to supply a new valve cheaper than eBay. See suppliers on the main website.

Try phoning Jim Fish at Wilson Valves or Valve and Tube Supplies on the IOW. Langrex,Colomor and CVC are akso likely to be able to help.

EBay isn't necessarily the cheapest or best place to buy things.

I have a number of tested 6SN7GTs. You can have one for the price of postage - please send me a PM with your address.

They attract the attention of the valve audio people which inflates the price. A valve from a low prestige maker such as Zaerix or Pinnacle will be cheaper.

Sig generators normally use one triode as an RF oscillator and another as an audio oscillator to provide modulation. Most valves will work in these positions. An ECC81, ECC82 or ECC83 should work, and an ex TV PCC84 should also be OK despite the heater being slightly underrun. It's not difficult to make an adaptor using an old octal valve base.

Hi,

I think the valve that you need is a 6SN7GT, an octal based double triode that should be quite easy to obtain.

The other valves in the Advance J2 should be a 6J5GT, 6V6GT AND A 6X5GT rectifier.

Hi,

I would like to say a big thank you to Phil G4SPZ for providing me with a valve for the price of the postage. I plugged the valve in today and the oscillator is now working fine.

Tim - delighted to hear the valve did the trick! Another piece of vintage test gear singing again.

All the best,
