4 already in and another 8 new audio grade caps on order from Cricklewood Electronics. It'll look a lot better in there if nothing else!
thanks for your continued support fellas. Tim |

Re: Looking for help please with 1964 Trio W-41 stereo valve amp
The original fault was described as a lack of gain. Looking at the design, I am not convinced there is enough gain for a low output MM cartridge. Anyone looked at the specification?

Re: Looking for help please with 1964 Trio W-41 stereo valve amp
Interesting...
what would you consider too low by way of output voltage? I'm only pursuing this avenue because I have heard from someone directly who had this sane amp in operation fine with an Ortofon OM20 cartridge. I have a Goldring 1022GX . does the TT itself have any bearing on output also? Thanks! |

Re: Looking for help please with 1964 Trio W-41 stereo valve amp
Hi Tim,
The OM20 has an output of 4mv which is in the same ball park as your one. I would have expected the amp to work fine with that. I can't find any spec for the phono input for this amp but I suppose the question would be what sort of outputs did 1960's hi-fi cartridges have? Completely forgot the pictures yesterday- until it was dark! Will do them today and email them later. The turntable will not have any affect on the output from the cartridge. Magnetics in the 60s had the same order of output as more modern examples - around 1mV/cm/s.

IT IS WORKING!!!!!!!!
Thank you everyone. It was the 2 wax coated caps 4/104 on pin 1 of v1 and v2 It sounds flippin lovely too! I'm one very happy valve amp owner. You guys rock. Special thanks to Nick. I still have 2 more caps to swap out on v3 and then I think I better leave it alone and just enjoy some tunes. |

Re: Looking for help please with 1964 Trio W-41 stereo valve amp
Hi Tim,
Ah the good old wax capacitors: vintage electronics would be no fun without them!! So in fact, the phono stage was working OK as confirmed by the voltage readings on V1 & V2. It may have been V3 that was unhappy due to the leaky coupling caps although there is a cap (C19, C119) in the grid of V3. That may also be leaky. Glad you've got a result: sit back and enjoy now All the best Nick |

Re: Looking for help please with 1964 Trio W-41 stereo valve amp
Cheers Nick,
C19/119 have been replaced also on your recommendation, they looked vey ropey! My 2 months spent wiring a recording studio into a gothic castle in Wales in 1996 has finally paid dividends. All that lead solder smoke didn't render me completely useless! It's not as neat as that wiring job was because I started that from scratch, but i's just as functional. I've learnt a lot and will now be for ever on the look out for another old amp to resurrect. |

Trio W-41 power supply (transformer) POP!!
Hello good people.
My euphoria on resurrecting an old Trio W-41 valve amp, with your help, has been short lived I'm afraid. I just switched it back on having done a little further work and there was a pop and a spark from around the input transformer. The fuse is now blown and I suspect the transformer has shorted somehow... Please can you advise me? Are there some initial simple steps I can take to check it through? Image attached many thanks Tim EDIT: I may have found the problem.... it seems captain clumsy here accidentally switched the voltage input switch whilst carrying it! I fed it 240v while the switch was over on 110v... If I get a new fuse will it be ok? Or have I most likely done more damage than meets the eye? Last edited by TimMills; 24th Nov 2017 at 4:35 pm. Re: Trio W-41 power supply (transformer) POP!!
Just fit a new fuse of the correct rating and it'll likely be OK.
If not, you're unlikely to do further harm by trying. Look out for smoke though.

Re: Trio W-41 power supply (transformer) POP!!
With any luck the fuse will have blown quickly enough to protect the transformer.
If you've been unlucky you may have blown valve heaters. You can check these with a meter on ohms range, or just check whether they light up.

Re: Trio W-41 power supply (transformer) POP!!
You've probably only blown the mains input fuse, so try fitting a replacement of the correct rating and type. But first, examine the one that has blown - just to make sure that someone hasn't fitted one that is far too big (in terms of current). And that includes the proverbial nail!

Re: Trio W-41 power supply (transformer) POP!!
Hi Tim,
That was unfortunate I have never liked just a switch as a mains selector unless it has some mechanical lock to prevent it being switched by accident. However, I would imagine you won't have done any damage to the transformer or the valve heaters- hopefully, the fuse will have blown quickly enough. It would seem you don't have the monopoly on doing silly things! I've just knelt on the floor to look at the type of fuse fitted to my amp- took my glasses off to see it better and promptly stood on them when I got up Have spent the last 5 mins bending them back into the correct shape!! Due to the large mains transformer, unsurprisingly, it has a 2 Amp delay type fuse fitted (designated T2A). You need to replace with the same type and not a 2A 'quick blow'. It's a 1.25 inch type glass fuse. Fingers crossed All the best Nick |

Replacing 2 caps with one?
Hello again from Norfolk.
A little more advice needed for my tube amp refurb please? I have been unable to find a single large can cap the right dimensions to replace the one going up through the chassis, so I've taken delivery today of a double 100uF cap to use just one side of it.... However I am now wondering if I can replace both these old Elna 100uF caps with the new double? The neg is common on the double so to my less knowledgeable mind it seems not, but maybe there is a way? I'm reliably informed the cap end on in the pic is C202 and the one next to it in the metal clip is C203. Please can you tell me how it might work if indeed I can replace both with a double? many thanks Tim |

Three threads relating to the same amplifier merged. There may be some inconsistencies.
