Tannoy Devon HPD 315A vs Tannoy Little Gold
Hi everyone,
I've had the option of buying either of the Tannoy Devon or Little Golds and would highly appreciate some kind knowledge and expertise on these speakers. It would be great to find out what the pros and cons are. Much appreciated, Adam. |

Loudspeakers are very personal things, and choice also depends on your room. I'm afraid it's impossible for anyone to tell you which ones you'll enjoy most. You'll find plenty of people prepared to tell you which ones you "ought" to prefer, but that's not the same thing.
Do you get to listen to them before buying? Have a good look at the condition and check their surrounds. David

I suspect that you will find little to choose between them.
Tannoy's 'lower-end' models have pretty basic cabinets - all the magic is in the drivers, and to a lesser extent the crossovers. |

I did have a listen to the little Golds and thought they sounded great.
I did speak to Lockwood and they said that the Devons are more for hi-fi use than the little golds. Lockwood also mentioned that it's not possible to buy one important part for Devons right now. |

In my opinion all these Tannoy small speakers sound good from the ECLIPSE series onwards. Just mount these on good solid stands (not on a bookshelf) and not too close to the corners of the room. Use 79 strand cables.

Why?
What's wrong with any old flexible 1.5-2 sqmm cable?

QED 79 strand is good general purpose speaker cable and not expensive, but you're right, any copper cable that's thick enough will be fine. Solid cored stuff can be difficult to route neatly.

Re: Tannoy Devon HPD 315A vs Tannoy Little Gold
The HPD's pre-date the Eclipse series and have a reputation for having a bit of a recessed high midrange although I'm happy to use my 15" HPD loaded Berkeleys for studio monitoring. They are very revealing. These both use 12" drivers. If they are a similar price and similar condition I would probably go for the Little Gold Monitors - they're a little bit newer, have a good reputation and, on the occasions I've used them, have worked well.

Absolutely noting at all. I only suggested the 79 strand as I rather got the impression that the OP was relatively new to Hi Fi and that the 79 strand is cheap, easy to find, polarity coded and very flexible.

Point taken. It's just a decent flexible cable then, not overpriced snakeoil stuff.

Back on topic please. The OP didn't ask about cables, but I expect he was grateful for the advice.

Re: Tannoy Devon HPD 315A vs Tannoy Little Gold
If the Devons have the same sort of connectors as my Berkeleys you'll have a hard time getting the 79 strand cable to fit - though you'd be fine with 2.5mm solid core mains cable. I suspect that the LGM's have more sensible connectors.
