Leak Stereo 30 Plus. Strange whirling sound.
Hi.
Just recently purchased Leak Stereo 30 Plus, gave it a good cleaning out and it has worked fine, but now one channel has really dropped in volume. It can be heard if turned up really loud. Have tried the tape monitor slide, but that doesn't change it.Also when I turn the amp off a strange loud whirling noise occurs, it's almost like a crying sound that dies away. If anybody could shed light on this it would be a great help. Thanks. |

When you cleaned it (inside I assume), did you dislodge/move the plug-in cards ?
If so then try gently removing them, cleaning the edge connectors and the sockets they plug into, finally carefully replace them. |

Hi and thanks.
No I didn't even touch the cards. The volume comes back up occasionally then a fuzzy sound takes over, then it goes low again. |

Still best to try re-seating the cards as a first step.

" it's almost like a crying sound that dies away." sounds like it's oscillating, have you had it on a scope?
Andy.

If you have some switch cleaner, try cleaning not just the monitor switch but all the switches on the back, try cleaning the connectors of the cards and reinserting them.

From memory of the one I used to have the tape monitor switch on the front panel could be problematic. Try some servisol on it and work it back and forth. Ahhh I’m thinking of the earlier stereo 30.

Yes to all of the above but don't rule out a noisy transistor somewhere.....I had this on a vintage Japanese amp....drove me mad before I found it.....Most times the amp worked OK but during switch-on and switch-off (mainly switch-off), there was a 'whooshing' noise in one speaker.
