Default A pretty little radio.

Just thought I'd share this photo of a very pretty Japanese pocket set that I've just nabbed from the local house clearance shop. It's a Hitachi WH638 MW/LW 6 tr superhet and apart from a noisy v/c and a slightly rattly speaker it works well. Cosmetically it's almost perfect, just a chip out of the case where the coin-slot is.
Some sets just take my fancy!

Yes I know what you mean and it is not always the most expensive or 'de-luxe'.

Indeed Nick. It's nothing special, just a tranny from '67. But the crisp, neat styling and the understated black & beige colour scheme appealed to me.

Hi Andy,
Any chance of a close up of the dial and controls, is the dial a rotating wheel?
I don't have one, it is just nice to see the different designs that are made.

Here we are, Nuvistor. It's very conventional of its type. Behind the plastic lens are 3 small windows - one for MW, one for LW and one for the v/c. Both controls are simple edgewise rotating wheels. Next job is to carefully clean this radio to remove over 40 years of grub!

Thanks Andy, we were Hitachi agents but I don't remember this one, mind there is a lot I have forgotten from 40 odd years ago.

Another fine example of "Sheerform" design. Although I previously called it Sheerline by mistake.

I remember that thread. I think I must be an un-knowing sheerform fan, I've always liked that clean, uncluttered look. BTW, the rattle in the speaker turned out to be a tiny chip of plastic caught behind the cone, and of course the volume control responded well to a tiny amount of Servisol. When aligning the set I noticed the MW aerial trimmer (integral to the tuning cap) was very intermittent because the insulating membrane was torn. Setting it to minimum capacitance and fitting a Mullard 20pf trimmer neatly across the tags sorted it out.

I like it too, as I like all well designed (in the exterior design sense) radios. Does what it says on the tin in an attractive form.

This https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...ghlight=perdio is one of my favourite sets, simple, looks good and works.
