Lot 8049 looks to include an Eddystone EC10, about the only thing that even slightly interests me.

Wonderful stuff to my eyes: if I had the pick of them it would be the 1933 Dynatron Commodore, bottom left in lot 8025, only the second '30s Dynatron table model I've seen offered for sale anywhere. And two examples of the scarce art deco Amplion table set...

I trust the estimates are fantastically low, often £30-£50 for a dozen or more radios the like of which were bringing as much or more each just a few months ago at Fakenham: though selling in such large lots has to restrict the pool of potential bidders.

Wow, that's some collection.

I really shouldn't look at these auctions

I'm glad I live a long way away

Values have been heading south for quite a while now, so the valuations may be plausible.

Certainly an auction in wholesale quantities. The hammer prices when available will be interesting
Any idea of whose collection it was?

Wow, I don't think I've ever seen such a collection go for auction. Some of the early wireless sets look very collectable at low guide prices. Wonder who owned all that?

Thanks for the link.

Goodness, that's a collection to rival Gerry's at Dulwich!

The estimates are very low on the round Ekcos, ditto VCM IV and VCM163

Actual prices will be an interesting commentary on the state of the market.

It'll be interesting to watch this on Thursday, it should be on easyliveauction and the-saleroom.

It appears that one can also watch or bid online directly through the auction house, online bidding slightly cheaper than going through easylive or the-saleroom, though the basic margin is 24%+VAT before adding the online surcharge.

Although I hope to watch the auction (timed such that I should be back from my local auction in the morning!) I shall probably refrain from bidding even though I am close enough that I could travel through to collect anything on which I were to bid successfully.

Whenever these hoards crop up, as they do from time to time, I think it's a misnomer to refer to them as a 'collection' - it's an 'obsession'.

The term 'collection' and 'collector' implies a measure of discernment. Ordinarily, sane collectors (of radios for example), either specialise in one sphere - round Ekcos for example, or more broadly a particular brand overall, or one good example of a wide range of radios. But in those 64 lots, there is well over 400 radios, one lot consisting of a stack of ten WCRs. In all, far too many that could be have been cared for, cherished or put on display.

Not that it matters, most lots are so large that even if they contain maybe a couple of radios a bidder might want, they'll be lumbered with maybe 15 or more that they don't want. No doubt most lots will go to dealers who can bid online, and if successful can collect a vanload full, then hope to sell them on auctions sites over time. But as always, however cheap they may seem to be, every item is a 'pig in a poke'. The auction, which is located in Glasgow, makes it clear that there are no condition reports, and no postage on any item, so is a bid succeeds, the lot will need to be collected.

Well the hammer prices are there now.

AVO VCM 163 £600 + 31% buyers fee if bought online = £786. Hope the meters are roller switches are good. (28.8% in room or a commission bid).

MK 1V, £260 + 31% = £340.

Ten WCRs £140 + 31% = £183.

(Anita Manning's Auction House, of 'Flog It', Antiques Roadshow etc fame).

Surprised to see the hammer price of £750 for the valves, given that lots of them were TV valves. (Close on £1,000 in fees).

Good to see most of those low estimates exceeded, but there were still some very cheap lots. Some single items attracted strong bids.

Some of the lots were instant collections in themselves! Got to be profit in breaking some of those up.

I watched this live on line, some good prices for individual/small lot items, not surprisingly the larger lots were good value but not many collectors now would want a mixed lot of circa 15 radios. I expect the larger lots went to resellers hoping for a profit.
I was tempted by the utility radio lot of 10 sets, had it been 2 or even 4 I may have bid.

Yes, that was the lot that I would have been closest to being tempted by, and at just under £18.50 per set could be considered good value for money, though I couldn't accommodate ten of them.

Surely that's more of a misnomer, since if it means anything at all 'obsession' implies a consuming preoccupation, which the collector in this instance may or may not have had. My own 'hoard', though maybe not as rich in interesting 1930s/40s woodies, and despite including only two Wartime Civilian Receivers, isn't so very different from this one and so might invite a similar bold diagnosis, but vintage radio matters occupy my thoughts and actions for possibly half an hour a day, and a fair proportion of that would be my activity here. I've a certain interest in the technical, commercial, aesthetic and social aspects of domestic radio history, hence or otherwise a daily living environment heavily populated by receivers and related items from the earliest to, roughly, 2005, pleases me more than any other that's as readily achievable.

As expected, many of the auctioneers' estimates were well exceeded, while such large lots surely restricted the pool of bidders. I didn't consider joining the fray, there were just two or three sets I might have attempted to buy had they been listed singly and if transport could have been arranged.

Good evening,

As this sale was local to me and had a number of rare sets that were on my wanted list, it would have been rude not to bid.
Due to the sets being mainly sold as larger lots, I am now snowed under with less desirable sets which I'll need to move on at upcoming BVWS events. Just the way it goes I suppose.
Overall, some decent prices achieved and some of what I'd consider bargains.
The good thing about these sets is that they all seem to have been kept in a dry environment and are actually in good condition.

I meant to watch online, but definitely not bid!
Other jobs dealing with my own valves got in the way of my remembering it.
