Morning Ed
Is self-build the objective or are there constraints regarding cost/performance? I ask this as the owner of an inexpensive Far Eastern-sourced GPS disciplined oscillator. The antennas for this type of equipment are plentiful in terms of supplier and the prices are competitive, to say the least.
Best wishes
Guy

Hi Guy, it is for an old Philips apnavigator (APN AVIATION) that I was given and appears to work, but was without the external antenna.

The signals from GPS are very low powered and antennae usually incorporate low noise amplifiers, using phantom power up the antenna cable from the receiver proper.
