Re: Television Day at the Museum this Saturday
Don't worry, Colin, they just keep expanding!
When I first looked around to survey the museum for a new RF Distribution system, that room had just been cleared to be turned into a display area, so there wasn't even a feed from the old system in there. However, there were about 16 sets already on show and Jeffrey Borinsky, who was showing me around, suggested I allow for 24 which, in my mind, I immediately increased to 32! It was soon obvious that this figure would be outstripped very quickly and I increased it to 64 but even that wasn't enough! (Dual standard sets, of course, need two inputs.) There is now a 2-way splitter, each output feeding an 8-way splitter which, in turn, feeds up to eight 8-way taps! I defy anyone to exhaust that 128 output capacity! Actually, RF never was the limiting factor - it is the power consumption of all those sets that causes the headaches, as John can testify! By the way, as my brief was to design a distribution system to last 25 years, I built in lots of expansion potential so it could easily be expanded three-fold using the existing amplifier! |

Re: Television Day at the Museum this Saturday
It was a great day, my wife Debbie enjoyed it, she'd not been to the museum before.
We've never seen so many vintage sets all working at the same time. The electricity meter must have been spinning like a top! The Ally Pally TV launch film shown in the room upstairs was great also. I've taken a few photos but you'll have to wait for the Winter Bulletin..... Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make it a most enjoyable afternoon, it was well worth the drive down!

However, I did say in my earlier post that the 128 capacity could easily be trebled, so I've enclosed a copy of the schematic for you to look at. The main 4-way splitter feeds the house and the shed, leaving two ports spare. That is how it would be so easy to treble the capacity. There is an area of the adjacent garden that Gerry bought which has various workshops on it, so who is to know what is going to happen to that area over next 25 years ... The museum was lucky enough to be given two excellent Teleste amplifiers which boast a good gain and excellent signal handling at high levels which I've taken advantage of. As the output is more than adequate for all possible needs to be accommodated by one amplifier, the second one provides a useful spare which can be swapped easily at any time. Finally, the high output power enables me to include my 25-year get-out-of-jail-free card in the shape of an 8dB pad on the output of the amplifier. This could be replaced by a 4-way splitter to quadruple the total capacity already available! Please don't tell me it's not enough ... |

Re: Television Day at the Museum this Saturday
I recognize the RTF French test card,I happen to have a large heavy RTF mono scope in my collection.
Possibly time to fire it up again.

Re: Television Day at the Museum this Saturday
We were away in Guernsey for the weekend so missed it. Let's hope for another, next year.
By the way, in pic 3 above, do I spy the control panel of a Telpro? I thought they'd all long gone.

Re: Television Day at the Museum this Saturday
Hi,
well here are a couple more photos. is the monoscope mentioned a couple of posts above 625 line or 819 line ? I'm looking forward to the table top sale next Sunday the 18th. Also yes I think the Sony set above was one that converted pal to ntsc then decoded it, hence the tint control. ( would that be a sensible way of getting ntsc from pal ? ) regards Peter B |

Re: Television Day at the Museum this Saturday
Here are a few more pictures from the recent 80th anniversary celebrations at the British Vintage Wireless & Television Museum.
The first and second pictures are views of the television display room. The third picture shows some of John Wakely's televisions demonstrated working out of their cabinets. Fourth picture is one of the displays including a Televisor. Fifth picture includes some of the receivers in the pre-war television display area, including a HMV 907 which was working during the day. |
