Connector used on TenTec 263 external VFO
Wonder if anyone might be able to help with manufacturer and part number of connector used on the end of the TenTec 263 external VFO lead that plugs into the Corsair II rear panel?
Thank you and 73 Bob GM4CID |

Re: Connector used on TenTec 263 external VFO
According to the manual for the Corsair, it's a 9 pin Molex connector, so you would be looking for the matching Molex plug.
Unfortunately, no part numbers in the manual available on-line, but someone with an original (printed) manual may have the parts list included. Terry |

Re: Connector used on TenTec 263 external VFO
Thank you Fred and Terry for your responses, much appreciated.
Pictures attached, Fred, one pin is actually missing in the photos. Terry, I have the TenTec regular user manuals for the Corsair II and the VFO, no mention anywhere of part number but I had guessed it would be from Molex. Have perused the CPC website but there are so many items to choose from. My intention is to source two housings and pins, one to fit on the end of the existing VFO cable and another for an external DDS vfo currently at the breadboard stage. The outside dimension of the housing looking at the pins is 15mm square. 73 Bob GM4CID |

Re: Connector used on TenTec 263 external VFO
After a bit of research I have managed to sort out what I believe are the correct items and have ordered some Molex 03-06-2092 housings and Molex 02-06-2103 0.062" crimp pins from RS.
Thanks for responses and 73, Bob GM4CID |

Re: Connector used on TenTec 263 external VFO
Hi,
Looks like one of these: http://www.molex.com/molex/products/...ire_connectors You buy the housing and pins separately and then you need the proper crimp tool. Might be easier to cut it off and use a D-type or something a bit more accessible. Good luck Peter G8BBZ

Re: Connector used on TenTec 263 external VFO
I think this is the Molex 0.062" series. Years ago (and I mean about 30 years ago) Maplin sold them under the name 'Multicon'.
Anyway, I think this is the plug housing : http://uk.farnell.com/molex/03-09-20...ole/dp/1654425 with contacts : http://uk.farnell.com/molex/02-06-21...ecSingleItem_2 This is the mating socket : http://uk.farnell.com/molex/03-06-10...nal/dp/2396379 with contacts : http://uk.farnell.com/molex/02-06-11...ecSingleItem_3 But do check the dimensions, etc. |

Thank you, Peter, spot on, I have the correct crimp tool and now await the parts from RS.

Incidentally, you don't need the special tools. You can crimp the pins as best you can with small pliers and then solder them to the wires. The pins just push into the housings, you can use a small screwdriver to push them fully home.

Re: Connector used on TenTec 263 external VFO
Thank you Tony, CPC had me confused and questioning my measurements as they only seem to stock the slightly larger housing for 0.093 pins. Good old RS to the rescue.

Re: Connector used on TenTec 263 external VFO
With a bit of dexterity you can actually remove the pins once they have been pushed home by using a jeweller's screwdriver pushed carefully up the side of the pin to release the tang. We used to have them on equipment at work and sometimes the wire would break off a pin and require replacement. There is probably a proper removal tool available for this somewhere.

Re: Connector used on TenTec 263 external VFO
Yes, the pin removal tool (which is not cheap) consists of an piece of thin-wall metal tubing with precise inside and outside diameters. It fits over the contact from the mating side of the connector and thus depresses the tang. There's a rod inside the tube that you push down to force the contact out.
They exist for most such types of connector (AMP, Molex, those D-shells with coax inserts, etc) but all are different sizes. |

Yes, I have had some success in making a working pin removal tool using a cylinder made of tin can metal, most success with the larger diameter pins.

Re: Connector used on TenTec 263 external VFO
Brass rod and tube from a model shop is what I used many years ago to make a pin removal tool.
Not having been in a model shop for some considerable time now, I don't know if the smaller sizes are still available. Terry |

Re: Connector used on TenTec 263 external VFO
Molex parts arrived from RS this morning and I am happy to confirm are correct.
Corsair II and external vfo now working together correctly, thank you to all for the helpful responses. 73, Bob GM4CID |
