Unidentified Station Name - UK Vintage Radio Repair and Restoration Discussion Forum

Hi all, on my Pye 834 tuning dial there is an abbreviated station name on Medium Wave that I haven't seen before and I cannot interpret. Wavelength 204m BR.C.W. It definitely isn't BBC West! Date of set 1938. Any ideas? Cheers, Jerry

Bournemouth Regional National Common Wave was on 1474khZ (203.5m)

Initially, I thought "British Country & Western"

– then wondered if there was once anything called "British Colonial Wireless".

Google said not, but it did throw up a suggestion of "Cable & Wireless", so I wonder if it is "British Cable & Wireless". Seems unlikely, though, as it seems the company never used that appellation.

Wasn't it something like:
"This is Radio 1 on 247m, and 202m in the Bournemouth, Poole and surrounding areas."

Hi

My best guess would be BRitish Common Wave. Used for low power transmitters where interference would be less of an issue.

I think Mr1936's 'british' abbreviation sounds more feasible than bournemouth TBH, as that would cover the local stations no matter where you were.
