Default Unidentified Station Name

Hi all, on my Pye 834 tuning dial there is an abbreviated station name on Medium Wave that I haven't seen before and I cannot interpret. Wavelength 204m BR.C.W. It definitely isn't BBC West! Date of set 1938. Any ideas? Cheers, Jerry

Talking Re: Unidentified Station Name

Initially, I thought "British Country & Western" – then wondered if there was once anything called "British Colonial Wireless".

Google said not, but it did throw up a suggestion of "Cable & Wireless", so I wonder if it is "British Cable & Wireless". Seems unlikely, though, as it seems the company never used that appellation.

Wasn't it something like:
"This is Radio 1 on 247m, and 202m in the Bournemouth, Poole and surrounding areas."

Hi

My best guess would be BRitish Common Wave. Used for low power transmitters where interference would be less of an issue.

This BBC document about the development of the transmitter network might be of interest:

Thanks Kevin, spot-on. Introduced via the Lucerne Plan on 15 January 1934 according to this link https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...CjNISpMds5NCrK Jerry Ditto Mr 1936!

I think Mr1936's 'british' abbreviation sounds more feasible than bournemouth TBH, as that would cover the local stations no matter where you were.
