Does this one merit inclusion? An Avo "Electronic Testmeter" made by ACWEECO and bearing the serial number 2292-250. Will need considerable TLC, so is it rare or otherwise worth the effort?

Thank you,

Phil,

It's not particularly rare, and beyond the scope of the Survey, but it's a useful bit of kit, designed and built to the original AVO standards, and well worth restoring to its original glory. Good luck !

Another Model 8 Mark V, Thorn era unit with part number 5170-211 (bought from University of York, who probably had it from new),
Serial: 00952 8V/5/78

The 15V battery fitted to this one is a BLR154, which is the right length but 15mm in diameter, so there's a plastic moulding to make it stay put (part 5210-064). Doesn't help a lot because it's flat ...

A reasonable Model 7 Mk 2 with a few bodged repairs - 450R and 4k5 multiplier resistors incorrect (see components wanted section), most case screws missing and some very poor soldering and chewed up screw heads associated with repairs. The two 1289 batteries had mercifully not leaked, but the holder for the D cell was corroded - now repaired.

Despite all of this, it works well and is probably close to its specified accuracy. The "7" is a very clever meter and I'm looking forward to using a few of its special features. ("Q").

It survived a trip through the post with little more than a jiffy bag wrapped around it and a piece of card over the glass. I'll give AVO the credit for robustness.

Ser. 2883-A-167-M

What does the "M" signify at the end of the serial number?

Leon.

Can't resist these at carboots especially for £3.

Avo 8 52821-C-1056

My 2nd Mk I and like the other it seems to be in perfect working order and this one even has batteries. Shame someone has used it as a soldering iron rest which has left a few small marks in the bakelite and 2500V screw terminals.

Model 8 IV 30846 84/2/71, caught on the way to a skip, complete with case, Avo leads and the croc clip. The croc clip is most useful.

Avo model 8 no 166161-C-1163.

Front panel engraved with SMA ( Snowy Mountains Authority ), E & M ( Electrical and Mechanical division, where my father worked since 1949, but this isn't his), Plant Number 324096.

Given to me recently by the guy that taught me half of what I know, alas now he is a very old man.
It's in well used condition but functions perfectly.
Regards,
Joe.

I have acquired an AVO Model D in wonderful fully working condition.

Serial number is 14571-544. I assume it was made during May 1944.

Neil.

Hi,
Was just researching the avometer i recently picked up.
Having looked through all the posts in this thread i thinks its what you would describe as a dc avometer 13 range (model 2) 1927 - 1936.
The plaque on the back states it was made at the Douglas Street factory, so i think that means it's later than 1930. It has a wooden lined battery compatment, which has the number - 1472 stamped into the base, is that the serial number? Nothing on the scale other than TYPE HR 2 and a part no 12159/5, is that the scale part no?
But i was a little confused as the inner part of the scale, the red printed part is labeled 10V.A.C, so does this mean it is AC as well?
I have added a picture, hope it helps.

Picture -
http://i979.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/P1010869.jpg

Just trying to test it, but probably beyond me. It accurately measured the voltage of a AA battery, but the needle seems to stick occassionaly.

Regards
Paul

Hi Paul

It is indeed a model 2. But its been got at, the scale plate is from a model HR2 which is a much later model with AC.

It is well known that model 2 scaleplates had a high risk of the paint flaking. Probably why it has been replaced.

Whether or not it still has its original movement is another question.

Regards
Trevor

Just got an Avo 8 Mk5, s/n 93018 8V/7/73

Bit of a haze under the glass/on the mirror - is there a way to clean that or should it be left well alone? Otherwise, it's in very good condition.

Cheers

Hi,

I got mine from a boot sale for £5. It's a model 9 mk2 14737 868 which I think makes it 1968.
