Also two nice Band I specimens pointing at Holme Moss, clearly showing that the driven element on the X is at the back. Also a Hor pol 4 element Band II, also on Holme Moss.

And finally to confirm all this, an old photo taken from the air:

https://britainfromabove.org.uk/image/epw009630

(Expand photo....control +) You can see the head frame of Bradford Colliery where the stack is with white smoke coming out, the road to the left of that site is Forge Lane, it's junction with Ashton New Road can be seen (where the tram is) The road opposite is Gray Mare Lane (where the other vehicle is) Immediately to the right of that junction on the south side of Ashton New Road can be seen the row of buildings that Baker's TV would later occupy, it's the one on the right hand corner of that row.

Heading south at that point down Penfair Street (called James Street on all the old online maps) you can see the row of 10 houses (count the chimney's on the street side) and the passage way at the rear, being mentioned in this London Gazette...Manchester City Council, Schedule 4:

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/...12044/data.pdf

Thanks Lawrence, I have enjoyed following your detective work, I may have driven through that part of Manchester, but driving you don’t get to see the detail, eyes on the road.

I get the feeling you were on a mission to get the details and enjoyed sorting it out.

Thanks, yes, I enjoyed the detective work.

Not a lot left from that era in that area now, almost all of it demolished and the area redeveloped, those pics were the Manchester landscape I knew when I first started in the trade, as it happens one of my ancestors lived in the Bradford area of Manchester and was a coal miner, probably down the Bradford pit.

I've been down every street in Manchester. .That's an old chestnut.
Stockport plane crash, Hopes Carr. I was there in the cars spares shop on the corner. Put the windscreens in with a car jack from the shop, pilots climbed out. Police pushed us off and stood around till it burst into flames. It was live at one point, took out a substation under the nose.

Just remembered, it was Lowe's Car Spares, later moved to Grenville St. Edgeley when Hopes Carr was redeveloped several years after the crash.

An interesting photograph. I wonder if the balcony was a means of escape if there was a workshop upstairs. If the shop/showroom had a fire the workers upstairs could exit via the balcony and a fireman's ladder.
The sign looks illuminated but possible small pygmy lamps and not neon.
Pity about the down-pipe from the gutters running across the shop front. It is still there in the Google street-view photo but has been re-positioned to be less conspicuous.

Really evocative picture. Looks a busy shop and those aerials! The 'H' appears to date from the opening of Holme Moss.

That up to date picture of the Estate Agents looks cold and clinical. Nothing much going on, no traffic, hence no trade. There were many shops in London very similar to this, quite a few owned by my mates in the trade.

Neon signs! Lovely but the EHT transformers could catch fire..All part of the excitement of the period. The lady in the head scarf is so typical of the times.

Not so long Lawrence. ( I assume you know it )
For those who are puzzled, its a Mancunian joke. Every Street is off Ancoats in Central Manchester.
Its quite a small street.

That reminds me of the "I can drink over xx pints of beer in xx minutes" joke.

That aside, the date for the Baker's TV shop photo is around the first week in June 1969, that would tally up with the "Derby Week" poster outside the newsagents that's three doors up, not that long before the start of the BBC1 and ITV colour transmissions from Winter Hill.

Also a correction to Post#22, should read Ashton New Road, my apologies.

Lawrence.

Something I was discussing with my sister on Thursday evening.
A young girl who was orphaned by the crash visited us shortly after the tragedy.

We played a board game. I was under instructions to let her win. I was 14.

I still feel very bitter about the avoidable loss of life that occurred.
The pilot did a fantastic job dropping the plane into such a tiny space, avoiding the police station and further on the hospital. He knocked the chimney pots off the row of terraced houses immediately before the crash site. The plane was almost intact apart from breaking its back. No one on the ground was injured.

All because a fuel valve was neither fully one way or the other.

Sorry, off at a tangent.

Was there an electronics shop in Stockport called Boltons, or Waltons or something similar? I have vague memories of, where my dad used to take me for components.

We lived in High Lane (village up the A6 towards Buxton) in the 60s and early 70s, and my Dad took me to see the wreckage of the crashed plane soon after it happened, made quite an impression on me, I remember it clearly to this day.

From Google Earth it doesn't seem that small. This beggars the question of whether you have been down every street in Bury, too?

ES is def still there. The 78 shop I think has now been knocked down. I remember going in there once.

What was the electronics and junk shop with very grimy windows on Lower Hillgate opposite the Robinsons brewery?
The other was on the other side of the road higher up, I sold him a high impedance speaker drive unit, brand new in a box, for a few bob back in 1965. Wish I had it now.

There still is a junk shop opposite the brewery but it's hardly got any stuff in it last time I looked. Doesn't look like it's been opened for years. I only peered through the glass as they did have some electronics junk in the window.
