Re: Braun SK5 no sound from the record player
If you go to the thread I linked to in post 12 it concerns your problem, with some good illustrations. The last post links to the way it was solved. The second and third cartridges in the previous post appear to be suitable for this.

Re: Braun SK5 no sound from the record player
After studying the two threads, I plan to buy this Ronette mono cartridge (https://ebay.to/329EBfw) to replace the original one, as replacing with mono cartridge seems easier than with stereo one.
Thanks for everyone’s help, let’s see how thing goes. |

Re: Braun SK5 no sound from the record player
It may have been easier to fit, but do remember you can't use this cartridge for Stereo LPs (and 85-90% of all LPs will be) without causing them permanent damage!

Re: Braun SK5 no sound from the record player
Hi, thank you for your reminder! I'm using this mono cartridge with mono stylus https://www.ebay.com.hk/itm/RONETTE-...72.m2749.l2649 , is it damaging the stereo record or any chance the stylus is compatible with stereo record? If it does damage stereo record, is it possible for me to put a stereo stylus in the mono cartridge to prevent damage?
Thanks! |

Re: Braun SK5 no sound from the record player
You need a stereo cartridge to play stereo records. A mono cartridge whatever stylus you use will damage stereo records.

Re: Braun SK5 no sound from the record player
The stylus may well be compatible with stereo records, but the cartridge will not have any vertical compliance. That means that there is no allowance for the stylus to move up and down, which is necessary for stereo records, whereas for mono records it only has to move from side to side. (horizontal compliance). So when to stylus needs to follow the stereo groove and move upwards, it can't, so it digs into the groove, thus ruining the record

Re: Braun SK5 no sound from the record player
I'm considering to replace the mono cartridge with a stereo one. However, the SK5 is in mono system, what will happen if a stereo cartridge is installed to a turntable with mono audio system?

Re: Braun SK5 no sound from the record player
To hear all the content of the stereo record through a mono sytem you must join together (Bridge) the left hand channel and the right hand channel. When you have bought a suitable stereo cartridge we can advise you.

Re: Braun SK5 no sound from the record player
When I do these conversions, I piggy back two extra terminals using some fine wire so that all four terminals can be connected. i dont have any pictures of examples.

Re: Braun SK5 no sound from the record player
Connecting the two original pick up wires to four terminals on stereo cartridge, is the most doubtful part for me. I'm not quite sure how to split the two wires into four.
However, let me buy a stereo cartridge first. |

Re: Braun SK5 no sound from the record player
I'm planning to buy the stereo cartridge:
https://www.ebay.com.hk/itm/Ronette-...8AAOSwOQJeijgI Is it compatible with SK5? Or this one is easier to be installed? https://www.ebay.com.hk/itm/Ronette-...kAAOSw9rpfCxuG |

Re: Braun SK5 no sound from the record player
I finally got a stereo cartridge and plan to wire it. I will use it to play some brand new stereo records, I should use series or parallel connection? And what is the difference between the two connections? Thanks!

Re: Braun SK5 no sound from the record player
Bridge the LH and RH channels to give you the 2 connections you need for your BRAUN. Then you will be able to play all the recorded content from the stereo pressing. So join LH+ and RH+ together and then LH- and RH- together.

Re: Braun SK5 no sound from the record player
In case it's not been said - don't get a soldering iron anywhere near the pins on the back of the cartridge - use the push on tags only. Heat from a soldering iron will kill a cartridge stone dead!

And to clarify, "bridging", do you mean twisting two wires together? So four exiting wires become two, and then I can connect the two wires to my Braun? Thanks so much! |

Re: Braun SK5 no sound from the record player
The left and right + & - are normally clearly marked against the pins on the back of the cartridge, so regardless of colours, you can work it out from that, as colours may differ.
Bridging with a fine wire wrapped round the pins is briefly described in post #31. Bridging with proper solder connections may be better done at the tag strip below the deck. |
