Re: Google Custom Search
This seems very good Paul. I have put my internal search failures down to a lack of competence in the past but then been surprised to find that google gave a result so, from my point of view, it's a mystery solved. Thanks a lot!

Re: Google Custom Search
Hi.
Oh well I am the odd man out I am sorry to say. I neither like Google nor what they stand for, I don't and won't use google and no longer use youtube. This of course is Paul's site and I am a little pawn here but as an individual have a right to say my piece.

Re: Google Custom Search
Can I ask why this change has come about? I just tried it and it brings up forum topics the same as the search feature does. Just wondering that's all.

Re: Google Custom Search
Thanks for that Darren I see now. It is easy to use and gives search results that you're after which is great. I use Google all the time anyway and have no problems with adverts either and best of all no waiting between searches. We now have a choice of two search options which is great. I thought I was seeing things at first when I first spotted it.

Re: Google Custom Search
The search bar may or may not stay in its present position and we're currently discussing different positions and styles.
At the moment it looks a bit odd stretching right across the page and the space it occupies at the moment means more scrolling to reach the bottom of the page. |

Re: Google Custom Search
Thanks Paul.
Not a criticism at you guys at all but just the way Google operates, I use Duck Duck & Go, Linux & Moxilla on the net. Win XP that isn't used on the net on another PC

Re: Google Custom Search
Very useful Paul, thanks.
At last a newbie can search for "that capacitor" and get meaningful answers. If you could thin the height out a little it would be appreciated. Rob.

Re: Google Custom Search
The old search will remain how and where it is too so people have that for the MT section or if they don't want to use the Google one.
Incidentally there is no financial involvement with Google for this, they offer it free for webmasters. Likewise their free Analytics visitor stats which I also use. |

Re: Google Custom Search
You are not alone Trevor.... These days I use StartPage, which effectively gives Google search results but without the added furniture Google adds to its results. I have nothing against Google, but mangling links to route via their servers, instant search and other nasties got me looking elsewhere. StartPage gives me search results, plain and simple.
That aside, the proposed repositioning looks good. The existing Google search box does seem a bit too prominent and is a distraction. Dave |

Re: Google Custom Search
New header looks just the job, great work Paul
One suggestion: are you allowed to change the text on the "Search" button? If so, perhaps it could say "Search Forum" or "Search This Forum" or suchlike. It maybe isn't immediately obvious, especially to those newer to the Internet, what "Google Custom Search" might mean, and they may simply confuse it for the type of "Search the web from this site!" Google search webmasters can add to their sites (and as such might just ignore it, because it would be perceived as being no different from simply using google.com). Ed. |

Re: Google Custom Search
Yes, the only requirement is that I have the "Google Custom Search" logo by it and any renaming is not defamatory or misleading. "Search This Website" may be better as otherwise people may think it is limited to the section or page they are currently n.
I am looking at doing that header change over the weekend. I will post when I'm doing it as things could be a bit messy for a while. |

Re: Google Custom Search
Nice work Paul as I have been using it and it's quicker, The image part is great too. I use Google as my main search engine anyway, more so than the others.

Re: Google Custom Search
Now I know whats going on, I spent some time trying to get rid of the Google Search box that had suddenly appeared. Thought it was Google or Firefox trying to infiltrate my computer.
Good idea, don't much like the location though.

Re: Google Custom Search
Hello Paul,
It sounds like it could be very useful but as already mentioned it does occupy a lot of useful space on the screen sitting there whilst it is doing nothing. Mike |

Re: Google Custom Search
Paul, congratulations, I have just tried the Google search and it is splendid. Your experiment on the new header design looks brilliant. I would certainly support any changes you make,.

Re: Google Custom Search
Same here and no issues with screen space on my laptop either and it's faster and brings a lot more things up, which is great.

Re: Google Custom Search
One niggle. Since this feature has been added, I no longer can view the site using my old Win 98 + IE5 machine in the bedroom. The browser simply hangs.
Yes I know... "Get yourself a computer newer than 16 years old!" Steve
