Default Banana warehouse in York - TVs, radios and gramophones

Hi gang!

Was in York today at the wonderful Banana Warehouse (like a carboot sale in, as the name suggests, a building that once belonged to a tropical fruit importer!). Basically a house clearance outlet.

Please see the attached image for idea of the kind of thing available. Also there is a big stack of vintage radios and several gramophones around the place.

Did you see the Ferguson Personal? I think that's what it is called. It has the BRC 900 chassis anyway. It has been there over a year now and two of the knobs have gone astray in that time. It looks like it could be a nice TV resto job, if the LOPT is OK.
Maybe the reason it has been there for so long is because they may have over-estimated it's value

Ooo wish they were local to me I would snap the top one up.

The Ferguson Personal you mention is the Model 3629, Dual Standard, the LOPT is pretty much bullet proof being the Red Jelly mould. Nice sets, a doddle to work on and very usable.

The Ferguson in the window?

Yes, it is looking a bit sorry now.
If anybody is in the area I strongly suggest a visit because quite a few new things have arrived or have been uncovered.

Hi, what sort of prices do the radio's and TV's sell for, if reasonable it would be worth a trip up there.

Regards,
Alan.

Got a CBP220 (yeah I know, not of the same vintage) from them about a year ago for £10 (demo'd all working) if thats any use as a guide of what scale to look at. They may decide that because they look retro they can ask silly money. Really don't know.

Give them a ring on 01904 621405 and mention they are the TVs on the racking on the right-hand side near the bunting.

Hi,
This sounds great, do you have any details about this such as location or opening times?

It's on Piccadilly, just past the carpark, on the right as you're heading away from the town centre. I've lived in (or near) York for getting on for 20 years and never even thought to look in there for radios- I know they're good for furniture.

Might take a look next time I'm in the city centre (which despite working in York is actually pretty rare).

Thanks very much for that info, I will be in York later this week and may well pop in and have a look around if I have time.

Hi. I have been in there many times. The owner once helped me out with a synchronous clock from a Goblin Teasmade (type "D") for use in my Goblin S25 Time Spot valve radio.
On a recent visit, however, they had a Peto Scott radio that they wanted £90 for -it wasn't worth that kind of money as the wood cabinet was in a terrible state!
Regards
Mike

Wish it was closer to me, the TV sets in post#1 were both sets I used to have in the 70's (Ekco and Bush). I would love to get the Bush, as it's been on my wants list for quite some time.

I do not think they would take the bad news about that radiogram very well....
I mean £15 is still a bit steep for a pile of parts, being radio section, turntable & speaker/s which are in a totally unknown state.

Take readers comments in the York Evening Press with a large pinch of salt. The paper is renowned locally for it's terrible reporting (inaccurate, lack of research, or generally reporting on trivial things ('a power cut affected three houses for 20 minutes') whilst missing major events in the area, and people take great delight in winding up the editorial staff with comments and letters.

That said - Dave Dee is well known locally (he's had a removals business for decades) and is a good bloke. The Banana Warehouse is a convenient place for him to shift things from house clearances rather than them going to the tip. I don't think he actually tries to assign reasonable market values to things, it seems to be guesswork (I looked at a sofa there one week, and the next week he had an almost identical one in for half the price).

They are normally open to negotiation on prices though, so if you can show that you know the true market rate, they'll often drop the price.

I was born and bred just outside of York and have known the Banana Warehouse since it opened, quite a few years ago.

In my opinion, not a place to get very excited about, I'm afraid.

10 or 15 years ago there was an extremely scruffy Bush TUG24 which he was wanting £75 for. It was there for a very long time and might still be there, hidden under a pile of stuff!

From The Press website, quote "overpriced tat" about sums it up, but then one man's tat is another man's treasure!

Best wishes,
Keith

Gosh I hope any of the readers of the Press don't ever stumble into a car boot sale, never mind a radio rally! Toffee-nosed or what!

To be honest I've only ever bought one thing from there but it's always worth a browse. Stock is always changing so someone must be buying it!

Anyway, someone please make an offer for these TVs to see if they can be got reasonably and let's not turn this thread into flaming one!
