WebSDR & JAVA
I haven't used the WebSDR sites for a while, Hack Green, Twente & so on. Now I get a notice about Java not being on my computer(Windows 10). However, I get the "Waterfall" View spot on, and associated adjustments, but no sound. Heaps of advice available from the WebSDR team &/or Hack green folk - on a complicated method of acquiring the Java App for sound. However, also plenty of warnings about the possible security risk !
Hey - what is going on ? Anyone know ? Is there a security risk from the App or associated cookies ? Regards, David |

Agree. Use HTML5 not Java.

Re: WebSDR & JAVA
Hi David,
Are you using Google Chrome? If so you may find it's a recent chrome "enhancement" that is also causing a "no sound" issue: Google Chrome has added restrictions in the autplay policy for sound. The workaround for now is to change this policy in your browser. In the address-bar, type chrome://flags/#autoplay-policy Set this flag to "no user-gestures is required". Please note that this affects all webpages! Worked for me with Win7 + Chrome from http://sk4ko-websdr.no-ip.org:8901/

Re: WebSDR & JAVA
I'm just using ordinary Google as my webpage. Waterfall is fine on HTML5, but no Java or HTML5 Sound. WebSDR Volume selected - max. As is my computer.
But hey - I'm not a computer whiz kid, nor do I download Apps willy -nilly. And I avoid Cookies like the plague. Me thinks I'll pop into the computer shop in Peterhead, next time I'm over that way, and ask a friendly engineer(a third of my age) to sort it. Will probably only take him 5 minutes. Several years back I joined Facebook to preview some family wedding photos of my son's wedding. Cancelled it after 3 days ! Jesus - what an insidiously invasive site that is. I guess the same several dozen stranger idiots who wanted to be my "Friend" - have passed on my email details to a heap of Viagra sales sits & phishing sites who think I'm either sex starved or wish to accept invoices from Fedex & such - just out of revenge. Seriously though, I reckon those of us oldies who are involved with vintage radio pursuits on the internet, need to become more "street-wise" in dealing with Apps & Cookies. So, have any folk had any security issues with WebSDR or Java or acquiring HTML5 Sound ? Regards, David |
