Rubbish tip find - lots of 10" + 5"reels
Went our local tip today and someone was about to dump boxes and boxes of 10" reels, mainly Zonal (plastic)and one or two blank. I think they must have come from a radio station in London. Each box must weigh about 10-15 kg!
There also about 50 aluminium 10" reels. Also there are lots of 5" reels with stuff on. There are also 12 X5" reels of blank tape. There also seems to be an interview with David Essex on one of the 10" tapes, complete with interview notes. I have no means of playing any of the tapes. What to do with them, 'cos it does seem a shame just to dump them. Answers on a postcard ........... Dave (Southampton) Mods, please move this thread if it's in the wrong place. |

Do you mean 10.5” NAB reels? Those are worth real money. Ebay is your friend here. Have a search for completed sales.
The 5" tapes should fetch reasonable money too, but check that they don't contain lots of splices where the tape has been edited (this is unlikely if the reels are full). |

May I ask how many 5" reels with material there are? Any idea what speed they might have been recorded at?
(PS, is that Mullard's old factory in your icon?) |

Re: Rubbish tip find - lots of 10" + 5"reels
If these come from a radio station I would expect the 5" reels to be location recordings or interviews - probably recorded on a Uher machine or similar at 7.5ips. As others have said, 10" metal reels are worth something like 20 quid each on Ebay. I must admit that I'm always intrigued by finds like this so I'll send you a PM.

Hi Paul
All the big spools are 10.5" diameter and the majority (200-300!) are plastic Zonal and the most only have a very small amount of tape on them. I've attached a couple of pics. Does that make them NAD spools? Cheers Dave |

Re: Rubbish tip find - lots of 10" + 5"reels
Those spools have NAB hub centre holes in them. Usually used with adaptors (look up the prices of NAB adaptors on an auction site to see that these things are wanted)
The NAB fitting has an expanding O-ring to grip the spool and prevent chatter, but as most recorders taking NAB spools use adaptors fitted to their smaller Cine hubs, the end result is not really any better than a cine hub spool would have been... but people like the big hubs The more common small centre hole with slots for three little wings are usually called Cine hubs because they were used on projectors. There's plenty of tape out there on 10.5" plastic spools where the owner would want to transfer it onto a metal spool. Also there is demand for good plastic spools that are not warped. David

Re: Rubbish tip find - lots of 10" + 5"reels
Amazing find, well saved. It is shocking what people are prepared to dump. The Zonal tape is robust and in my experience does not suffer from the sticky shed syndrome.
I have a few radio station tapes, which I have picked up second hand over the years or been given, they generally fall into two categories: a) edited 'productions' or 'spots' ready to be broadcast; or b) raw speech recordings such as interviews (which are/were to be edited). If the former then there is usually little tape on the spool, just sufficient for the duration of the feature in question. At the moment I am digitizing some 1961 ATV and BBC Panorama, Tonight and Searchlight TV recordings I came across whilst looking for material for my Found Tapes Archive. Real time capsules taped off 405 line TV. So do check the contents before erasure, might be something interesting there!

Re: Rubbish tip find - lots of 10" + 5"reels
One thing that occured to me is that it might make sense to just splice all the short tapes together to make a few long ones. That would mean that you could get rid of the empty reels if you wanted to without losing the tape.

If I was a David Essex fan, I would have been all over this.
These tapes need listening to. There could be some really interesting stuff on them . Keep us informed if anyone plays them .

Re: Rubbish tip find - lots of 10" + 5"reels
Hi Folks
I've had a chance to produce a sort of inventory of what's in the boxes. There are 52 (6 nearly full, some with splices) 10.5" NAB aluminium spools. 110 Zonal NAB 10.5"plastic spools mostly with very small amounts of tape on them. 5" spools 22 with tape on plus 18 in boxes (some possibly unused). Re: Rubbish tip find - lots of 10" + 5"reels
Hi again folks
A thousand apologies for the long delay - a combination on health problems and deaths of friends. The reels find at the tip were given to me absolutely free and I would like the proceeds of selling them to go to a charity, for whom I work as a volunteer. The name of the charity is Dentaid and much info can be found on the website www.dentaid.org . I was looking at Paul Stennings section on selling for charity: As noted in forum rule D5, items offered for sale with all proceeds going to charity do not need to have an exact price quoted. This is to help relatives of deceased collectors who are clearing items and would like to support a charity (such as a local hospice who helped to care for the person), but do not know what the items are worth. In such cases, please make fair and reasonable offers, and do not see it as an opportunity to try to get something valuable cheaply. So that both the buyer and the seller know that the money is definitely going to the charity, the buyer should pay by cheque or crossed postal order, made payable to the charity (not to the seller) and should post it to the seller (not to the charity). This way the buyer knows that the money will go to the charity, and the seller knows that the buyer has actually paid. Anything else could leave room for doubt by one or other party, which is not what we want especially considering the likely circumstances of some of these sales. There has been some interest in some or all of the items, so I propose getting in touch with each of the interested parties by P.M. about how to proceed. As I have no means of listening to any of the tapes, I'm happy for them all to go to a new home. I would welcome the views of the moderators about the steps outlined above. Cheers, Dave |

That's fine. Post in the appropriate section. You may ask for offers, with a minimum offer. Please post the details of the charity.
You may get better prices if you sell on eBay, but that's your decision. |

Hi Paul
Thanks for that. I've had some interest via PMs but I'll put it in the for sale section, with a reference back to the posts in the Vintage Tape (Audio), Cassette, Wire and Magnetic Disc Recorders and Players section. Cheers Dave |

Well I'll certainly be making an offer for some of the 10.5" spools when you do.
