Default Dave Schmarder's MakeARadio no more?

This very brilliant and extensive website appears to have vanished. Makes me realise how ephemeral the web is. I am not sure how much has gone, or whether it will reappear. From comments online it seems fortunately Dave is ok, but the person who paid for the web domain has apparently been ill a long time.
Could this information be preserved? What is the best way to download the lot? I have referred to the site a lot over the years, but it is a mammoth task to download a small part of it. Here it is on another forum:

This is the story from Dave. I find it truly horrific how this quantity of information and expertise can vanish. Hopefully somebody will find a way to preserve it.

The problem is that these sites get set up by enthusiasts with little IT expertise. They become popular and grow, but the administration doesn't get any better. Eventually the hosting company or domain registrar will step in and shut it down.

The contents of the site are very likely to be stored somewhere, but it will take someone with a decent level of expertise to revive it. One solution may be to host it as a static site with readonly access, but this is still problematic if it's been compromised.

Hi in the past I have used a website copier to copy a web site including links etc. So when/if the site goes you still have a copy, works as if you are on the original site . The prog I use is HTTrack web site copier :-

https://www.httrack.com/

I find this useful to have a copy of some websites Mick

Mick, that does sound useful, and there is I see a Linux version. But Dave's website is at least 50Gb which might take quite a while.

No need to download the website - it's already been archived - https://web.archive.org/web/20200718...akearadio.com/

It is rather a shame when splendid websites cease due to a variety of reasons such as infirmity, bereavement, affordability, or a change of interest.

Until some years ago, there was a splendid vintage radio website in New Zealand, which - among other things - had lots of information about the 'Hiker one' and 'Hiker 2' series of radios that originally featured in the 'Lamphouse Annuals' in the 1930s. It had several excellent examples built by enthusiasts.

It just closed down without warning, but has since been acquired by ‘Boatanchors downunder radio’, though most of the links don't work:

https://www.oldradios.co.nz

The 'Lamphouse Annuals' are available from other sources, notably 'World Radio History' (and what a loss it would be if that 'fell over!):

https://worldradiohistory.com/New_Ze...cellaneous.htm

Also on Mike Peebles site:

https://www.peeblesoriginals.com/pro...kers-radio.php

https://www.peeblesoriginals.com/index.php

For now, there is the excellent website of PA2MRX in the Netherlands, (in English), with lots of information on winding basket-weave/spiders web coils. Also, an explanation as to why - on simple coil winders of wave-wound coils, such ash the Morris-Gingery one, to get a straight-line trajectory back and forth across the coil (rather than sinusoidal), it's necessary to use a heart-shaped cam - not a simply offset cam. A diagram explaining the geometry a heart-shaped cams and how to design them in on the page:

http://www.pa2mrx.nl/UK/PA2MRX-UK.ht...brewing_uk.htm

What clever people who originally worked out the geometry.

Some forum members may recall the ‘Thompson Brown Family’ website with lots of battery scans? No longer around, albeit most of the scans are available elsewhere on this and other forums.

Hard to imagine the time and effort that goes into creating and maintaining such splendid sites.

I could never have imagined 30 years ago that today, we'd have superfast broadband 24/7 for the price of a daily newspaper, with such a mine of information just a few mouse-clicks away.

Hi,

Found this today on YouTube, a great video in the same vein.
Search Crystal radio, History, Design, Contesting

Kind regards

Terry, that's great, thanks for the link. How permanent is that archive?
David, it it true that we today have amazing access to a great deal of information, that must help knowledge and expertise to be passed on, but it does at times seem like smoke in the wind, and dependent on the constant emergence of other websites to preserve content when they perish. With all this fluidity it could become like a game of Chinese whispers! Books have their advantages. Actually Dave Schmarder's site would make a jolly good book.

It's been around for many years and the intention is for it to continue for a great many more.
