Default A Family at War. TV set.

From the Granada TV series "A Family at War". Note the TV set in what appears to be in the setting of a wealthy household.

Odd that it's positioned behind the sofa, looks like a console set with Bakelite screen surround

True, I thought it was displaying something but it must be the lighting reflection.

No, only London. After the war London TV restarted, followed by Sutton Coldfield in Birmingham in around 1948. Not sure if this could be picked up in Liverpool though. Liverpool TV would probably have started with Holme Moss around '49/50. Not sure about the dates but in essence, thats it.

Perhaps Harry Porter (Patrick Troughton) brought it back from 1953!

Holme Moss started Oct 1951, Sutton Coldfield was received in South Lancashire but only in favourable locations, due to the topography it would have been difficult in parts of Liverpool.

Believe it or not, I can remember this shot from a Family at War way back when it was originally transmitted.

At the time I was very puzzled by the type of TV. It certainly was a very odd prop to include in a production set in 1942, especially in Liverpool that had no transmitter in range until after WW2.

When I saw this I rushed for my camera and caught this shot just before the scene ended. An earlier shot showed that it had a triangular control panel to the left of the cabinet very similar to the Ekco 200/300 series but it does not resemble any model from the Ekco range.

The screen size looks to be a 15" with of course a circular tube. It looks unfiddled so I too would be interested to know its origins. It looks just post war with an Ultra type W720 style mask. John.

The T164 has the controls on the right. 3 large knobs and two small in a vertical panel.
The Center top appears to be white in colour but this could be a linen cover so beloved by housewives of the period.

It also has an English Electric look but I don't recognize it. I think the front knobs were cream in the earlier shot. The Ultra controls are also on the right. J.

I can't help in identifying the set, but the scene here is supposed to be set in a well healed flat in Chelsea London. Have been watching this series on TPTV as I missed it back in the 1970s on ITV. The character David Ashton shown in John's (HKS) photo, is staying at one of his RAF mate's flat instead of being home in Liverpool for Xmas. So this does put the tv set in its correct location for its time.

Could it be a Ferguson 988T? The mask certainly looks like it.

Being positioned behind the sofa could be a subtle hint/reference to the discontinuance of TV broadcasting at the time.

I've taken a couple of off-screen snaps of this telly.
Apologies but the aspect ratio is wrong in the photos, this 4:3 programme displays here as 16:9 and our Sony set flat refuses to do otherwise.. so everything is stretched widthways.

Anyway, the Ekco-type control recess is visible as are the front panel and control knobs.

Watching the programme, the light band on the top does look like a fabric ornament, in fact SWMBO volunteered that before I could even comment!

Any help to anyone?

Pete

It could also be just a mock up prop, put together with what was available.

I think it looks too good a job to be a prop Frank.
That front assembly has four knobs on it and is very well made. I don't even recognize the front. It appears to be fitted with an original vintage tube and is standing away from the wall slightly. The top left knob appears to have some lettering on it?

We will never know! John.

I'm surprised a lower middle class family were deemed able to afford a TV.
One release I see is not available from Network.

There is a Dutch "complete uncut" version on Amazon though. Anyone know if it really is uncut with break bumpers and original Granada captions?

It'll be next on my shopping list if it does.

Cheers
Brian

Available from Acorn Video - boxed set. Granada ident at the end of each episode, but not as an intro, so perhaps not what you are looking for.

Thanks for the link. I've read reports some episodes of the Acorn release are edited, presumably to chop off the break bumpers. Surprised they left the original Granada end caps though.

There's also a Dutch release advertised as complete and unedited at some £20 cheaper too. I've asked The Mausoleum Club forum if anyone there knows if this is indeed complete or not.

I'll post back their answer!

Cheers
Brian
