Re: Derwent Television
If you know the approximate dates of the adverts that would be good, looking forward to more photos.

Re: Derwent Television
The chap in the photo (Post #2) looks uncannily just like me as I did in the late 70's.
And I continued to wear a shirt and tie every day right up until my retirement 6 years ago. Personal standards and all that! I was always known as 'the engineer with the white shirt and tie' whenever I turned up in the control rooms. (It's not me in the picture btw!). |

Re: Derwent Television
The TV that "you" are demonstrating is a Rediffusion Mk4 which is something of a surprise. The remote control in later pictures points to that as well.

Re: Derwent Television
Lovely! As has been noted, if you have the dates for these ads it would be useful to include them.
I'm always fascinated by looking at the prices in vintage ads and translating them into their current-economy equivalents - if only to rejoice at just how much cheaper and affordable these consumer-goods have become for the ordinary punter-in-the-street. |

Re: Derwent Television
Stop rejoicing please - us repairers are fed up of the 'we might as well buy a new set rather than pay for the repair' brigade!
I imagine the brochures in the second post date from around 1983. It shows the Mk4 remote TV with a headphone socket and video input - the latter with a good old toggle switch and LED! Glyn |

Re: Derwent Television
Derwent TV shop possibly Bromley? 1965 after a fire in the showroom. Lots of burnt sets stacked outside on pavement.

Re: Derwent Television
A scrub with 'FLASH', a squirt of Servisol and a rub with Colron and hey, we have some nice recon sets.
I hope a Philips G6 was not to blame. They rented them in the mid 60's.. Super company Derwent [Central Equipment Ltd. Perivale] Very high standards. Their chief engineer C.H. Banthorpe wrote many technical papers for 'Electronic Engineering' during the 40's and 50's. In my opinion they should have been the suppliers of radio and television equipment to the Royal Family rather than DER [Domestic Electric Rentals] who were not in any way connected with Derwent, the Rolls Royce of rental companies. Re: Derwent Television
Ah, but the Austin or Morris 1100 (just in shot parked behind the van) has side indicator repeaters. These were only fitted from the MK2 onwards which would be 1967/68. Can't see any rust on the 1100 so it was probably almost new!!

Re: Derwent Television
I saw that, but the reg simply tells us that the picture couldn’t have been taken before 1965. But it could have been taken any time after 1965 and surely the adverts for colour telly would lead us towards 1967 at the earliest?
Perhaps think of it like this - the picture was taken in 1967 and the shop had its 2 year old van parked out the front of the shop. Yes? |

Re: Derwent Television
The two older 17" TV sets are most definitely Central Equipment manufactured. Not so sure about the 19" model and large set with the rimband tube. Looks like a dual standard receiver. Did Central Equipment make such sets? Is that a Hoover Constellation vacuum cleaner hiding behind the TV sets?

Re: Derwent Television
Does anyone remember the rental on a 25inch CTV, 27/6d a week seems cheap for dual standard model? I am wondering if they were refurbished. That would put the photo perhaps a little later than 1967.

Re: Derwent Television
I would guess it dates from 1967/8. 27/6d would have been about right for a 25" colour TV per week. £5 10/- a month was a lot of money back then. They would have been too new to be recons.
The Central Equipment receivers have a Pye look about them cabinet wise [CTL58] but were totally different having been built at the C.E. factory. The receiver on the top has a Pye 700D/700A appearance but probably has no connection with it. Of course we are presuming the fire was caused by one of the TV receivers may just as easily have been the result of the receptionists fag setting light to the waste paper bin. Derwent rented Philips products from around 1963 and I can remember the Philips G6 being pride of place in their Wimbledon Bridge showroom. The G6 LOPT failed on a semi regular basis but I can never remember one actually catching fire unlike the MK1 Bush CTV25. There may be a report in the local paper of the period, that is if anyone has the time to search! John. |

Re: Derwent Television
Hi
The fire doesn't look too bad, unlike the ones caused by the infamous pitch-encased LOPT on a Bush CTV25. The lady in the front is clearly ahead of her time, holding an invisible mobile phone to her ear! Glyn |
