He has an enviable 'fist' too - probably using an electronic keyer.

Yes, G3XGC - Dr. GA Cottrell in Oxford, licensed 6 Jan 1967.

He's been in the hobby for the long haul - great that he's still active and such a proficient operator 53 years later.

I wonder if the gent in question got his PhD from Cambridge? And if so, was it in Radio-Astronomy?

Looks like it, but he seemingly didn't pursue it as a career.

Yes, he got his PhD at Cambridge and worked at Culham. He has written a couple of books too.
