Default Midget Comunication Receiver MCR1

MCR1. Designed by Major J Brown and built by Philco. Ive owned this one for many years, every so often I dust it off and give it a run. This time round I had to replace one of its valves.

Click on the link to see it working.

Tony,

thank you for posting that. Its always interesting to see a historic bit of kit actually working. I didn't see a reference to the aerial you were using - so I was bit surprised that Volmet was so faint - which of course may have nothing to do with the MCR1 and a lot to do with the aerial and the propagation on the day you did the film.

I note too the high IF of the MCR1 - 1.7MHz - at least it was high for the 1940s. They must have been concerned about image responses when they had very little room for decent RF stage filtering and did the obvious thing, and raised the IF. Funny how long it took for that idea to catch on!
