Default RIP Steely Dan's Walter Becker

Very sad to learn of the death of Steely Dan’s Walter Becker at the age of just 67. I suspect that there’s been nothing played in my house over the last 40 years more often than ‘The Dan’.

Sad indeed - the lyrics were as good as the music, and had that appealing tongue-in-cheek quality.

Not just that - the production standard of Steely Dan's music was outstanding. A number of their pieces are often recommended as reference tracks for testing hifi kit and speakers.

If I had to pick a top twenty best song to listen to by anyone since 1963 then Ricky don't loose that number or Reeling in the years would have to be in there somewhere.

I haven't played my LP of 'Pretzel Logic' for many years - but that is easily done - today - in commemoration of a great band.

That is exactly what I do. SD and the Eagles, nice 'uncoloured', flat mixes, perfect for checking hifi and sound systems in general.

Good old fun to sing along to music (I bet I sound awful with headphones on), great production (like ABBA but don't tell anyone!). I suppose I would put it in the "sophisticated easy listening" category. Hard to believe it is more than 40 years since the first record.

Thank you Walter.

My wife calls it "lift music", ah well...

A sad loss indeed and at such a young age, many thanks for some great tracks walter and for being part of the soundtrack of my youth.

Sad news, my Dad is a fan of Steely Dan and in the early 1990's often used to play a CD of their greatest hits, normally in the 10 disc Philips multichanger in his J reg Vauxhall Carlton.

At one time playing Steely Dan songs on the radio seemed to be a way of showing a DJ was a "muso" & not a Smashie & Nicey style of DJ who loved the sound of their voice more than the music they were playing.

Van Morrison was another artist to get this treatment.
