Amstrad VCR7000 VHS video machine equivalent models
Does anyone know if the Amstrad VCR7000 VHS video machine was a 'one off' or a badged machine built by another company? Reason I ask is, I have a brand new pinch roller for the former, but it may well suit other machines too. If so I want to know which ones. Thanks.

I was led to believe they were rebadged Orion machines, think the majority of amstrad stuff was rebadged, with the exception of some of their computer stuff.

Thanks. If anyone provide actual make and model numbers of equivalent models that would be great.

Only a thought, but it may have been one of the machines which was built by the Amstrad/funai partnership.

Re: Amstrad VCR7000 VHS video machine equivalent models
I do not recall a Amstrad vcr using the orion deck all though I can not remember the 7000,But I think that electronicskip might be correct about the Amstrad/funai models.I remember the 4600 & 4700 vcrs wih all there clutch problems.I seem to remember a BBC2 program on a Sunday night that was based on financial matters , having two important businessmen having a slightly
heated dissusion about the Amstrad verses the Matsui ( orion ) vcr.At ground level it seemed that one got fired hence my lack of knowledge about the 7000 regards Derrick |

I'm pretty sure it uses a Funai mechanism. But not the modern, Chinese Funai.

Re: Amstrad VCR7000 VHS video machine equivalent models
Much to my amazement last week a customer asked me to repair his VCR which was a slightly later version - the one with the 'clock' handset. It is indeed made by Funai and isn't a bad deck. Lots of belts and the carriage is driven by a belt nudging another one. The machine in question had seized spindles on the pendulum gear which is a bit of a pest to get back correctly, especially when I hadn't repaired one for at least fifteen years so was a tad rusty (me, not the machine). Besides belts, heads and pinch roller (which needs to be in good condition to avoid tape creasing) there's not much that failed on these.
I was told the capstan motor would work in the Hitachi VT33/63 series but I never tried it. This would have been handy as they were available from Sendz Components at a fraction of the cost of the Hitachi unit. Glyn |

Re: Amstrad VCR7000 VHS video machine equivalent models
Thanks.
It seems from what people are saying that it was a Funai deck. So what other brands/models eg Panasonic, Ferguson - whoever, used this particular deck?

Re: Amstrad VCR7000 VHS video machine equivalent models
Well if it's the deck I'm thinking of it appeared it the Hinari VXL8 and VXL9, some Alba models, also the Amstrad Double Decker used 2 of them (double trouble!) and sods law dictated that the lower deck was the one that needed attention. There were loads of other brands that used this deck, usually at the budget end of the market.
One good thing about these is that to change the upper drum all you did was remove the 2 screws and it just pulled straight off, no desoldering required. I remember an article in Television magazine about these which stated that a company could retip the drum with standard head chips which offered much improved SP performance, but the trade off was that LP would no longer work. |

Re: Amstrad VCR7000 VHS video machine equivalent models
The deck was indeed a bit better than the later Funai decks that bend if you look at them for longer than 3 seconds, but it was still relatively cheap and nasty. Incidentally in this deck, bending (pliers needed) was a quick fix for the dumper rubber going soft.

I'd forgotten about that rubber brake! We used to change loads. Not that I'm admitting anything, but if we'd run out a piece of sleeving from thin mains cable did the job...
I think you could specify MCES to replace the compromise heads with SP tips as post #9 mentions. Glyn |

Re: Amstrad VCR7000 VHS video machine equivalent models
Were Funai the only ones that used a 2 head drum for LP models?

Not sure, but I think Orion did as well.
