Default KB FB10 scale fitting.

Hi guys.

Can anyone let me know how the tuning scale should be fitted to the FB10. The one I've recently restored had a loose tuning scale which I've now decided to sort out. Someone has obviously been there before and attempted to repair the fixing.

A few pictures would be helpful if possible.

Thanks very much.

Rich.

found the camera - and the FB10 quicker then I thought!

Appears to be held on using pushfit clips and a piece of cardboard - see pictures

I'd say don't go there. Even with the greatest amount of care and patience, I haven't managed to remove a single clip without breaking a pillar yet.

I've done a few, and have had about an 80% success rate... but no more.

The secret is to pull and turn back and forth, but keep the force axial so there's never any sideways force on the pillar.

I have to agree though, that they're really more suited to situations where dismantling is never going to be required.

OK the spire clips (well three of them) are in place but what are the strips at each end of the scale because those bits are missing on mine.

Hi Rich, Just had a look in my FB10, the strips holding the dial seem to made of the same material as the cover behind the "handle", a sort of tough cardboard, presumably heatproof... , closeup view attached.

Regards, Mick.

That's the problem then! I should be able to make up some strips using some insulating material that I have. I notice also that there are some strips of cloth at each end of the scale and along the edge as well. I think some suitably cut strips of foam will do the job so now to get busy!

Thanks guys.

The trick is to use a pair of long nose pliers to pull up on the centre of the long side while holding down the short side. This releases the "teeth" slightly and should enable the clip to move. The pillar should be slightly tapered so once you've started to move it it gets easier.

(Easier I said, not easy. Bear in mind that these were intended to go on and not come off again!)

Nick is right though, make sure you pull in a straight line or you will snap the pillar off as it will be brittle through age and heat.

It's fiddly especially in a small cabinet like the FB10.

Regards,

That sounds like an excellent trick, Brian, but what do you mean by the "long side" and "short side"?

Hi Nick,

The picture in post 9 shows the difference in lengths quite well.

Most spire clips I've met have an obvious long side.

Just to make things a bit clearer I've sketched what I mean by the long and short sides.

Ah, I see what you mean, I too have never seen a sqaure one.

Thanks for your explanation, Brian. I've always done the exact opposite of what you suggest in the past, but will try your method next time.

Nick.

Method "B" is to use two sewing needles to push into the inner ends - needles need to be thick enough to lift the clip so it is free of the plastic post.

This method works well - if there's room.

And Mike's picture is much better than mine!

Good point, Brian; sometines they are recessed or things get in the way.

It wouldn't be if I drew it freehand.

If, when you've removed the spire clips, you can file a small flat down the lenght of the side of the post you will find it much easier to refit and remove the clip in future. Just push the clip down with one of the teeth against the flat and when you reach the bottom turn the clip through 90deg to keep it tight. reverse the procedure to remove the clip. I can't take the credit for devising this, I think I found it in an old set ages ago and thought it quite clever, but I've only seen it the once.
