Default Bush AC41

Hi
Anyone know why my old AC41 has 5 valves instead of 4. Or is it not an AC41.

Hello and welcome to the forums. What's the valve line up?

In times-past, it was common for British radios to be described as having "so many valves plus rectifier", a hangover from the days when radios were often powered by a separate 'battery eliminator' power-pack.

(I believe that at one time there was also a tax which varied with the number of valves - and that rectifiers were not always counted in this!).

So in a couple of decades either side of WWII you come across a "four valve plus rectifier" description for a radio with five actual valves!

Service info for the AC41 shows this as a three valve plus rectifier set. The chassis drawing is similar to the OP's picture, but with only four valves.

If that's it, the valve line up is in post #23 in this thread:-

The AC41 on the radiomuseum site appears to have the hole in the chassis for an extra valve socket that is not fitted.

I gather that Pye had a Dublin factory that obviously would have produced models tailored towards Irish market needs- perhaps this was an AC41 variant with the higher overall gain of the classic "4 + R", with typically a triode AF amp stage driving the output valve. In this case, the "extra" might be an EBC41, perhaps preceded by EF41 or EF89 IF amp and followed by an EL41 output device.
