Found a unique Soviet-era custom-built power supply
used in a state TV studio and Moldova-Film studio. The owner of this equipment writes the following: "During the Soviet period, professional cinema and video equipment was frequently imported from Japan, Germany, and the United States. Such equipment was extremely expensive and difficult to repair locally in case of failure. Additionally, much of this foreign equipment operated on 110V, while the standard electrical voltage in the USSR was 220V. To solve this problem, the workshop of a state television and radio broadcasting company received an official request to design and manufacture a custom-built power unit specifically adapted for this task. This exact type of unit was later also used at the state film studio “Moldova-Film”, supporting professional video and cinema equipment. Originally, approximately 30 units were produced for institutional use. Over time, as technology changed, these devices became unnecessary." I need your advice on the uniqueness of this device. Only one known surviving unit. Photos inside. Thank you! |

Devices similar to this are common in France where the supply voltage was raised from 110v to 220V during the 1950s. Owners of earlier radios needed to use these to drop the new higher supply voltage so that they could still use their existing radios. I have two such devices. They are switched variable autotransformers with a built-in meter to check the output voltage under differing loads. I see from the meter markings that this device dates from 1979, I suspect that many of these would have been made.

Technically not very unique, but combined with the other original equipment it would be worthwhile for a museum or collector.
