Ferguson 3238 fast forwards but nothing else
Pressing fast forward on my Ferguson 3238 works, with occasional clicking sound. When idle, a squeak and stationary, but screeching noise. Play tries to start, but stops, as does re-wind. I have opened up the cabinet, but can't see how to get at the various lubrication points that the service sheet says. Does one have to remove any of the electrical assemblies? That looked a bit daunting and as though de-soldering might be involved. The DC43 service sheet does not seem to give any clue.

Re: Ferguson 3238 fast forwards but nothing else
The main problem with this deck after fifty years or so, is hardening of the grease used to lubricate the swivel shaft of the metal arm/bracket that moves the position of the "intermediate puck wheel", located on the underside of the deck. This couples the drive from the motor pulley to the capstan flywheel. This puck wheel also moves up and down, when different tape speeds are selected.
To gain access, you would have to release the large printed circuit board that obscures it (to the extent of its wiring) and then remove the motor (secured by three circlips and to the extent of its wiring). You may need the service manual for the complete tape recorder (not the one for the DC43 tape deck alone) in order to see the manufacturer's procedure for so doing. This manual covers the Ferguson 3238 and Marconiphone 4238. The 3230, 4212 & 6212 tape recorders (DC43), manual will also suffice, as the only differences are in cabinet styling. The same problem also affects the mechanism that places the take up turntable drive pulley (the very large diameter one) in the correct position during PLAY and RECORD modes. To gain access to this, you need to remove the tape heads platform (to the extent the wiring allows). I'd also check that the two cork brake pads are actually released from the two turntables when the deck is in any mode other than STOP. When in FAST FORWARD OR REWIND modes, the drive to the two turntables is achieved by moving the three pulleys by the motor drive pulley (made of brass) into various positions. If they aren't moving enough, then drive will be weak or non-existent. Last edited by dazzlevision; 18th Jun 2018 at 11:31 am. |
