I agree with Paul that grill toasting is pretty fool-proof ..... and I have over the years become pretty dis-enamoured of dedicated/stand-alone toasters until - I finally managed to acquire a second-hand Dualit at a car boot.

Parts for these Dualits aren't cheap [all parts are however readily available] - but how often are these required? The thing is essentially 'bullet-proof' anyway ........ featuring: a mechanical timer; a manual/mechanical slice lift; and a proper functional and effective crumb tray etc.

But the best part? It produces the best toast I've ever had [and keeps it warm until you remove it from the appliance/slot too].

I don't eat much toast - but have to fess-up to a 'warm smug feeling' these days when I do!

We're heavy toast consumers, both with and without marmalade or baked beans, or sometimes in my case mushy peas. I think we're settled for good on a Rowlett Rutland Regent, not nearly so well known as Dualit at least outside catering spheres, but quite similar in size, weight (6kg), functionality and price. Its Brutalist charms were one reason for the decision to buy it and relegate our old flea-market Dualit to a standby role, while another was its readiness to produce one slice or three of toast when required, rather than that Dualit's options just of either two or four. Like the Dualit, the toast stays put, and therefore hot, until you want it: the Rowlett does produce a modest "ting!" to let you know it's ready.

Ours is already at home in its Norfolk kitchen just as it was until last Monday in County Durham. Oh, and other colours are available...

Well it is nominally about a Tefal toaster, but there's a limit as to how long you can eke that subject out!

When a student I had a single ring hob that did double duty as a grill, best toast ever. Took ages to boil a camping kettle until I blackened the underside with candle smoke. Kettle boiled, toast toasted and room warm enough to get dressed. There where some dire rooms available in Cambridge late 70's, cheap, cold and near college, happy days. Made the pub so inviting of an evening, self service launderette next door to the pub too.

Totally OT, my bedside radio was an HRO (socks on top).

When I stayed with my grandparents in Newcastle I knew it was time to get up when I heard my granda scrapping the toast, unfortunately smoke free zones put a stop to that.

I also remember a toaster with fold up sides but don’t remember it being used.

i use a Morphy Richards toaster[ circa 1966] everyday it makes great evenly browned toast first time every time and the added bonus is its canary yellow

Was that what he did after scraping the black bits off resulted in structural failure of the whole slice?

It's still a feature of Dualit use- a previously unknown make/type of bread sometimes toasts much faster than the usual 2 minutes give or take!

On the Freeview channels (normally during the early hours) they are flogging an end-loading toaster, claiming it's the greatest, latest technology and, whilst it looks ideal, around £70 may be beyond reason.
