I've built a lot of stuff on Veroboard, the most recent being two versions of the RGB / Synch combiner for the FOTH TV project. Kats design worked first go, but my op-amp based unit is more susceptable to pick-up, and I think "dead-bug" construction would be better for this. I've also fallen foul of stray capacitance in the past, when building a driver for impulse clocks (using a watch crystal and some CMOS logic to generate the 30s pulse for old style slave clocks), the extra capacitance of the tracks put the adjustment on its limit.

A truly excellent job . That just shows the really professional appearance that can be achieved with thought for design even with Veroboard .

Thanks for the comments folks.

Keep building, must get some more veroboard.

My Teac A3440 has a headphone monitor but it is Mono. So I analysed the headphone circuit and built another on Veroboard. Luckily the Teac has a stereo headphone jack wired for mono so I hope to be able to split this into stereo working and feed the new amp from the Track 3 and 4 monitor buttons and the original amp from the Track 1 and 2 buttons. Have also acquired a dual 50k pot to replace the original single though it may be a bit tricky as the original goes direct to the board, anyhow it should be fun trying to fit the pot. I also managed to get the original transistor types so hopefully the gain/performance will be close to the original amp. I lay out the circuit first using good old PAINT! I have a library of board matrix, tracks and components, incidentally I also use it for drawing circuits again with my own library, I find it easier and quicker than some other methods but I guess it is down to what you personally prefer. I have attached 3 items, the circuit, the proposed board layout with track cuts and the final board photo. I use Veroboard all the time in the course of my work, some of the layouts are very large, compact and complex. If you take the time to layout first and trace the circuit afterwards to make sure all is ok you normally get a very good first time work result. If you cut down a small paint brush to make it stubby, it can be used to clean the flux off the tracks and joints afterwards with the help of a little IPA.

Let me guess, is it your standart converter?

I think you've seen my 405 converters on strip board, so I don't show it here
again.
Today it is not a big thing to make a PCB. Sending eagle board to the PCB maker and getting the PCB's (weeks) later.
The problem for me is, I don't have a schematic when the project is started.
First the thing will be build up and than I've a schematic.

Kind regards,
Darius

You are right there Darius. And I couldn't agree more for a commercial product.

But when I get it in my head to build something, I want to start now
So I just grab a blank sheet of strip board, and some components.

And end up with blisters on my fingers from the twist drill, I use to make track cuts.

Why not use the Vero spot face cutter or hold the drill in some kind of handle or chuck? I've used both methods and my fingers are fine.

Or use a cordless drill on its lowest gear and speed setting - most are surprisingly controllable

Thumbs up Re: Bodge-o-tronic: Veroboard!

I've been using veroboard since I was about 7 when I built a flip flop with two AC128's.
I've now lost count at how many times I've used it but I prefer it over PCB's for power, digital
and low frequency stuff as I feel very limited with PCB's. I like to experiment and modify circuits
but with PCB's I normally end up cutting tracks adding components to the underside and
creating a ratsnest of wiring, it all gets into a bit of a mess and the tracks start to lift after a
few resolders, but with veroboard I can modify, add and take away bits till my harts content
and the track doesn't seem to lift.
The latest project is a nixie clock, it's still very experimental at the moment but getting there
slowly.

File size=328Kb http://mysite.orange.co.uk/waystar53/stuff/NixieClock2.JPG

I've yet to build a suitable box for it but when finished I will post a picture on the forum.

Great to see I'm not the only person who doesn't use one of those flash cutter things I've never ended up with blisters though

What's the proper name for the matrix board that has copper 'islands' around each hole rather than the tracks or strips on veroboard? I used to call it 'protoboard' or 'prototype board'.

Does anyone know of a source for it?

thanks
Colin

Hi Colin,

Maplin do a range of different land groupings, both linear and triangular if memory serves me correctly.

Hi Darius,

You've been tracing out the circuit. I just know it

Peter.

Thanks Peter, I tend not to look for anything in Maplins ... just a habit I suppose. They never seem to have what I want!

I'll check out their website.

Hi All,
I build loads of stuff on vero board and I use it for work as well.
My most ambitious project was a 405 line SPG which I built in my youth in the days before I had descovered PIC micros. The SPG produces the 2V drive signals for my Marconi Monoscope.

The last thing I built for myself on vero has become quite a mess. It is a pulse to DTMF converter that I built into a 300 series telephone to enable me to use it at work. It took a bit of tinkering to get it right and also due to the lack of space inside a 300 series (the original transmission circuit is still used) I ended up jumping wires over the tops of chips. I'm quite reluctant to publish this one!

As for work I ususally use vero to try out bits of circuits and new ideas. Once I have a concept of how a product may work I go straight to a PCB. Using PCBs early on is expensive, but generally my Bosses are more impressed by the look of PCBs and it gives them more of a feel for the finished item.

Cheers
Andy

You've hit the nail squarely on the head there Andy.
That is exactly what veroboard is produced for... Prototyping, and one off's

Surely you mean Vero Pin rather than nail

Now Andy I think you're just showing off by using Veropins. Never used them myself but it does tidy the job up a bit! Well, I'm just off to cut a new bit of board.

Providing that we are not talking about RF stuff, I don't see anything wrong with using Veroboard.

For a spotface cutter I use a similar device used by clockmakers - look here and search for burr remover.
