Thumbs up Tubular dial lamp for HMV sets

Hi all,
Just found this supplier of lamps and they have a stock of lamps to fit the HMV sets that use this odd mains tubular lamp. It is a slightly higher wattage but my guess is it will be fine or alter the bulb tapping on the transformer?
Either way it saves a lot of modification of other types of lamp and looks just like the real thing

Thumbs up Re: Tubular dial lamp for HMV sets

Hi,
Thought folks would like to see the lamp in place.
Paul.

I assume the original lamp would have been rated at 15 watts, and if so, a 25 watt lamp represents a 66% increase, and over time the additional heat and current could damage the dial or transformer. If the set were mine, I'd be inclined to insert a resistive or (better still) capacitive dropper in series to reduce the lamp dissipation a bit. My rough calculations suggest a series resistor of 1.2 k (10 watts) or 2.5 uF as a starting point, but adjustment may be necessary.

Good lamp supplier, though, with a wide range of odd types. Thanks for posting!

Hi,
Yes I agree having had time to experiment I have fitted a 1KΩ 10 watt resistor in series and that seems to be about right. It is certainly simpler to fit a resistor than trying to change lamp bases etc
The lamp looks just the job
Paul.

You should have gone for these ones. Only a little shorter. http://www.lampspecs.co.uk/Light-Bul...4Pa38Ta38Mch10
The 55W looks like a missprint.

Hi,
Already tried one of these and unfortunately they have a "coiled", filament which only gives a spot of light. The tubular lamp I am using has a single festoon filament running along the tube.
Thanks anyway,
Paul.

After looking at the crazy prices wanted for shipping, I got a microwave lamp rated at 15W and a socket with a rubber expanding collar intended for a table lamp. The whole dial is illuminated with no heat concerns.

Hi,
I shall have to have a look at one in my local DIY shop. The ones I saw when looking the last time all appeared to have filaments that were to short or circular in construction.
Paul.
