Default Decca CS1830

Hi all,

I have the above set that has a good tube and the cabinet has been refinished, it has been done quite well apart from the front face is covered in Fablon and not that well either! I have taken the Fablon off and the wood is painted black underneath. I want to restore the original finish, can anyone please tell me what it should be as I can't seem to find out myself.

Cheers
Lee

Lee - I'd assume it would have been the same as that of the front panel (teak?)?
Is it possible to strip some of the black paint off to look?

As an aside, at the big Thorn (RR. MB, DER) depots, Fablon was used on cabinets when they were too bad to be french polished - results were good, if it was done in the correct way.

In the pic it looks like th eFablon was original .But its not that clear. If its veneered under the paint then you will have to remove that first as sugested

I remember the version with just 4 channel change buttons. They were mostly teak.

Hi chaps,
Thanks for all the info, this is very helpful. Thanks for the pic Neil, the fablon was not original and I think it would seem that the earlier version of this set with the four push button vari-cap tuner has a teak front and the later six button (like mine) a black vinyl type covering. I am going to try and source some of this material I think.

Cheers

It will have to be speaker friendly fabric to let the sound through like Neil's set . Sid Chaplain does the later stuff that looks like leathercloth etc but will work on speakers I think .
