Ferguson IKC2. Something went BANG!
Hi All
Have a problem with my favorite tv, My Ferugson A51F (IKC2), was watching it for a few hours today and when to go get a drink, was half way downstairs when i heard a crackling sound and POP, rang back into the room and Thick Grey smoke was Pouring from the set and it stank. The set was still on, video paused as i had left it but smoke was billowing from the back of it, turned it off and id say within 30 seconds the entire room was filled with smoke, Opened the window and thankfully had a Facemask close by to reduce me inhaling the fumes (a bit), got the smoke cleared out (pic below is traces of smoke still seeping out the back about 5 mins afterward). Opened the set up and couldnt see anything wrong, no bulged or blown caps, no resistors that look like they ignited, nothing, everything looks good so im baffled as to what actually popped in the set (See pics of the board if you can spot anything) While I had the back off i turned it back on and as i suspected it powered up and ran fine, no more smoke, no strange noises it just started up as if nothing happened. has anyone seen an IKC2 do this before? can anyone help me figure out what exactly could have happened? its strange seeing as the set seems to be operating perfectly yet that initial crackling and pop and the amount of smoke something definatly went bang in it somewhere but i cant spot anything. Hope you guys can help, this is my favorite set of all my CRT's and want to prevent any further damage so have it stored away till i can (Hopefully) get some suggestions on what it could be before i start using it again. Its only ever had a new flyback last year and other than that has always worked perfectly. In 9 days time it'l be 29 years old (Sticker dated 28th July 1991 on the inside of the cabinet)

I don't know this model but this sounds like typical mains filter capacitor failure. If you do a forum search for "Rifa" you will get an idea what to look for, perhaps near the on-off switch.

Could it be the mains smoother?
Most, if not all, sets work without them, but when they go, they don't go quietly. Check near where the power lead comes in, around the PSU. Edit: Post crossed with Simons Good luck '77 |

Check inside the red cage, IIRC the live side of the PSU lives in there.

Hi Luke
This sounds that it might be the mains filter cap. more so if of the Rifa type possible mounted across the on/off switch or is on the main board under the red cover at the front of the board . Set will work with out it (as you say)but replacement must be of the X2 type . hope this might help. Derrick |

Re: Ferguson IKC2. Something went BANG!
Now that you mention it, the set does have one of those rifa caps, you can just about see it under the red cover, i had forgotten, i changed this last year when i changed the Flyback (completely forgot) the old one had bust its guts and must have done so when in possession of the previous owner (bought the set on eBay in 2010) i had 1 of those caps from a cracked IKC2 board that i just swapped (Obviously not knowing the history of these type caps) and i guess thats what happened here, another old cap and the set was on and off a few times so i guess the fragile nature of those caps plus the thermal cycling did it in, next time i get a chance i'll pop that red cover off and have a look and see but it seems the most likely explanation is that rifa cap.

CPC or RS stock reliable class X capacitors that won't give any further trouble.

Failed posistor? Either a two or three legged device on the primary side of the power supply to power the degaussing coils at switch on, once it’s done it’s job it just sits there getting hot and cooks itself. When they fail they usually blow a fuse. If you take it out you’ll know if it’s had it if it sounds like a jar of instant coffee being shaken.

Those thermistors usually leave the mask magnetised when they go off.
Purity errors have not been reported this time ans also it was too smelly. I am alsp pretty sure it was a RIFA. |

Re: Ferguson IKC2. Something went BANG!
Its not the positor anyway, it degaussed when i turned it back on after everything happened, its definatly the rifa cap, will pull it out on saturday when im off work, but i can tell you the smell from it was disgusting so it fits the description of a bad rifa

Yeah. Sounds like a typical RIFA cap failure. Very common problem on many electronic appliances indeed.

Check the mains switch, these gave a lot of trouble including the symptoms you have.

Michael's right - these should have the larger white switch fitted as opposed to the small Lorlin one. They operate with a more positive 'click' than the originals.

Re: Ferguson IKC2. Something went BANG!
Use a proper X class capacitor. 0.1uF 275V~ is a bog-standard value. RS or Farnell will have them and they will be approved types. In fact if you can get a 300V~ type in the space, go for that.
