Default BSR X4H. Is it stereo compatible?

Hello.

Just bought an old Portadyne record player for the Monarch UA15 deck as I needed the arm mount because the one I have is broken. It came with an X4H cartridge which still works. Is it stereo compatible like the X5H?

Many thanks, John.

Hi John
I believe your X4H cartridge is indeed stereo compatible.
The first BSR compatible cartridges were the X3 range.

That's really interesting. For all my years in association with BSR in manufacturing and re-selling, I never knew there was ever existed a BSR X4 series? There was a very early TC4.
Also, I believe the X5 series preceeded both the BSR X3 and X1 series, but I stand to be corrected.

Hello Dave,
Thanks for your prompt reply. I will use it and keep the X5H as a spare. The X4H is plenty loud enough. Many thanks.

I agree with Edward, but I’m not an expert and I keep learning every day.

Hello all,
I have a photo to attach but am unsure how to proceed. I have created an album which is the picture of aforementioned x4h. Any help would be much appreciated.

I also didn't know that a X4H was ever made. Have replaced many X5H over the years and I have seen a few X3H, mainly in late 1960s record players. You never stop learning in this game.

Hello all,
The x4h is smaller than the x5h and the mounting clip is white plastic instead of steel. I am using it as a replacement for a TC8h in a Dansette Senator. The x4h came out of a Portadyne r/player radio but would probably have been fitted with a TC type. It would be interesting to know the output of the x4. I think the TC8h is 850mV.

Regarding my unfamiliarity with this "newly discovered" BSR X4H - what I find unusual is the self-adhesive sliver label attached to the cartridge body. All BSR cartridges of this period, before and after have the type designation engraved and colour filled or moulded into the cartridge body. I wonder if this is a clone?

Hello all,
Edward you could be right, that is why I wondered about the white plastic mounting clip. The two X5H's that I’ve got have a steel clip or you can use the screw hole on top. The X4 clip is the same mounting as the X5. I will send some more pictures later.

I still am inclined to suss the provenance of this "X4H". Just see the way that BSR designate their cartridges as per the legitimate X5H on the right. I just don't think this was made by BSR.

The cart body looks like a C1 or similar from below. This cart may be a rebadged USA type, Astatic or something of the same era.
