Default Brighton Auctions - Radios and Test Gear - 22/23 June

Have been to the local auctions today for a look, some interesting stuff.
If you want an original Hacker Mayflower, or a black round Ekco; now's your chance !

The radios look to be in very good condition, the test gear also.
The AVO looks literally, brand new, barely a mark on it. The red and black leads are in the box too, they didn't photograph them for some reason.

I'm going to bid on the Ekco, I'm only saying this, because I don't think I've got a hope in hell of winning it !

Evening Max Power

The Ekco Ad65 looks lovely. I saw it advertised and asked for a condition report before submitting a bid. The report back says the radio is in working order but the case has been repaired. If you are looking for one with a undamaged case just be careful. The auction house will provide a picture of the repaired case if you ask for a condition report.

Hi Active, thanks for the update, shame about the damage. I wonder how working is working, if you see what I mean.

It will be interesting to see what hammer prices are achieved.

Round Ekco prices seemed to have softened this last year or two.

The £1,000 - £1,200 might be a tad optimistic, especially given the cabinet damage.

However, the Mayflower estimate looks way too low.

I'm not a Hacker fan, but I believe that the Mayflower with the rounded corners is the one that's most sought after.

The mixed test gear lot is anyone's guess - the AVO8 MK5 looks in nice shape.

Three days to go, so we'll soon know, if only out of curiosity.

Mustn't forget to add the buyers premium (18%), online commission (3%) and the VAT on both of those. I can't be bothered to work it out exactly, but it must come to about another 25% on top of the hammer price.

I assume each marks up on top of the others

1.18 * 1.03 * 1.20 = 1.458 So what you pay is 45.8% over hammer price.

Maybe the 3% on-line is additive to the 18% buyer's premium, so the arithmetic becomes 1.21 * 1.20 = 1.452 So you pay 45.2% over hammer price.

At this point, you may feel the need to use vocabulary not suited to a genteel forum.

I believe the sum is 18 plus 3 =21% x 1.2 = 25.2% The VAT only applies to the "services" element.

Ah, still quite bad. Some second hand goods get VAT on the full selling price which confused me.

Thanks
David

I'm inclined to agree with David's first 'assessment' - the Brighton & Hove Auctions T&C's do state:

26. Purchase Price. In addition to the hammer price, the buyer must pay to B&HA a buyer’s premium at the stated rates inclusive of Value Added Tax in accordance with the Auctioneers’ Margin Scheme. VAT may also be payable on the hammer price, but only if the lot is marked to that effect.

All of the 3 auction lots linked at the start of this thread are listed as "VAT on hammer 20 %", on the 'Auction Details' tabs of each lot.

Maybe worth checking directly with B&H Auctions before bidding... auction fees are a minefield !

I hadn't read the small print, but it looks as if you are correct. I notice all the lots in that auction are in that category. I wonder if it implies the seller(s) are registered for VAT themselves, i.e. are businesses?

This is a local auction for me but £120+30% for the RV14 was well beyond my budget.

I won the test gear at £30 (plus £7.56 charges) so if the gear all works then a good win, will see when I collect it next week.

Well done on that David.

I wonder what the AD65 and Hacker Mayflower went for? (No hammer prices shown).

The Mayflowers with the square-cornered cabinet seem to go on eBay in nice condition for £60 - £100. The round-cornered cabinet models are rarer, and I think are more attractive, more sought after, and hence, I believe go for considerably more.

(Not personally interested in any of the lots, just in the prices they attained).

Not sure what the Hacker sold for. But the hammer price on the AD65 was £900. A bit more than I would have liked to pay as the cabinet was not prestige. I requested a condition report on the cabinet so was aware of what looks like a previous repair to the front left hand side of the cabinet.
Hope the buyer was aware of this.

So the extra fees did amount to 25% - rather opaque. But that means the overall bill for the AD65 with a damaged (?) cabinet came to £1125. Ouch.
