Hi,
Apologies if this has been covered already.
A day or two back I watched once more the abovementioned Mullard film showing how shadowmask colour tubes are made on YouTube which was often shown as part of the BBC trade test colour transmissions back in days of yore. It's a fascinating film but, right at the end, completed colour tubes are seen coming along a conveyor belt face up with the gun supporting the weight. Surely they should be face down which is much safer? Would the glassware of the gun be strong enough, or was it just done for visual effect?

The CRTs would never have been supported by their necks. [How could they? It would be a balancing act too far.] You will probably find the bowls were being supported by a sort of two fingered hand similar to the device used to support the tube while fitting the gun. I have not seen the film for years but I suggest the supports were not visible in the film. John.
