English-language broadcasts on shortwave in 2021
I have recently taken a renewed interest in shortwave and thought of starting a thread on English-language broadcasts on shortwave. Here is one currently on the air at 1250 GMT:
Radio Romania International on 15460 kHz, coming in quite strong. Please feel free to add more stations to this list. |

Re: English-language broadcasts on shortwave in 2021
The other day I had a tune across the 22m band and found a strong station broadcasting in an unknown language: there seemed to be a party going on with shouting and singing so I looked on shortwave.am where you can select for English etc or 'any language' and found there were scheduled broadcasts in a Chinese dialect from CRI at that time. I was impressed to find that the Chinese can be so jolly in public and continued to listen until it dawned that they were shouting and singing "Praise the Lord, Halleluiah!" over and over: it was an unlisted American evangelical broadcaster!

Currently a bizarre rant about everyone using guillotines, thousands of them. Shortwave.am shows it as Brother Stair.

Re: English-language broadcasts on shortwave in 2021
Radio Belartus is on for much of the evening on 3985 with a good signal. Interesting that a cash-strapped economy can run a 250kW transmitter just for cultural self-promotion

There's RNZ Pacific (previously RNZ International) but I suspect it isn't going to get to the UK! English languages services on short wave, AM and DRM.

Re: English-language broadcasts on shortwave in 2021
VoA still have shortwave broadcasts aimed at Africa https://www.voanews.com/voa-broadcas...ency-schedules
and NHK (Japan) has English broadcasts on shortwave too. https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/ja/i...y_schedule.pdf Alas there are relatively few SW broadcasters still active - most of those remaining seem to be either religious or political. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...o_broadcasters |

I've never logged that one! I mistook the Radio Australia Kookaburra song for a monkey at first, I have just discovered it even had a name, Jacko, the Kookaburra! RSA and RAI used avian interval signals too. I don't know their names!

Re: English-language broadcasts on shortwave in 2021
Hi.
Another religious broadcaster pops up on 9330 Khz, WBCQ, it has English broadcasts at various times. Romania's ident tune reminds me of the old Comecon days, it sounds quite depressing. In early 2019 there was an unidentified station I received on the 120 meter band that kept repeating a few bars of a tune for hours. I only ever heard it one evening and then never again. Oddly the those bars were firmly fixed in my head until one day last year Judy was watching something on you tube which used it as a background track. Since then I found out what it was and downloaded it. Out of interest it was I'm Enlightened by Maddy Haddad, why the first 15 odd seconds were repeated for hours I'll never know but I like the tune.

Re: English-language broadcasts on shortwave in 2021
Voice of America can be heard direct from its Greenville transmitter on 11720 kHz. Was listening to it for the last quarter of an hour or so. Pop music followed by a news editorial and then sign off at 2200 GMT. Fair to good reception.

Re: English-language broadcasts on shortwave in 2021
WBCQ on 9330 kHz with a fair signal heard at 1745 GMT using a Sangean ATS 909X. Telescopic antenna sufficient for reception.

Re: English-language broadcasts on shortwave in 2021
This morning 9510kHz had a good signal 08:00 - 09:00, programme in the style of Swinging Radio London or Laser Hot Hits, probably Radio Merlin International but I couldn't wait for an identification. Presumably licensed air-time from IRRS Saftica, Bulgaria
Transmissions like this and genuine pirates are regularly logged in the French forum https://dxrad.groups.io/g/main

Re: English-language broadcasts on shortwave in 2021
Saw this in the paper today - an interesting redux of AFN, whose signals were ubiquitous on MW and SW for more than 50 years.
I used to listen to live boxing-matches and baseball-games on AFN in the 60s and 70s. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/radio/ra...munism-europe/ [yes there's a paywall but any ad/script-blocker will easily get round it] If you're interested in re-living the pirate-radio thrills of the Medium Wave 1960s, it can be worth listening between 6100 anf 6400KHz on a Sunday morning, where you'll likely hear a number of English-speaking pop-pirates, with distinctly-variable modulation-quality! |

Re: English-language broadcasts on shortwave in 2021
As far as I know it is still illegal to deliberately listen to "unauthorised" broadcasts in the UK. The only things allowed are legitimate broadcast and amatuer radio (that includes all amateur emissions, TV etc.). I still haven't worked out if I am allowed to listen/decode my neighbours weather station (433MHz) or even my own!
