PYE PE80 Waveband Shutter Cable.
Hi All,
I'm currently working on a recently acquired PYE "International" radio, of 1953. The steel cable which connects the waveband switch shaft (one end) to the display shutter (behind the tuning scale glass)..... ..... is in the bottom of the cabinet. I would imagine that the sequence of events was that the shutter jammed and considerable force was applied in an attempt to free it..... ..... as the cable (still attached at the waveband switch end) is frayed / unravelled in the middle - but otherwise intact. Q. Could anyone suggest a source of "7/42 SWG stranded, high grade, tinned steel wire" or equivalent as specified in the manual please? N.B. Image of the relevant service manual illustration attached. Many thanks in advance for any assistance offered.

I don’t know if it would work but Bunnings sell picture hanging wire in various thicknesses.
Peter For example...... |

Re: PYE PE80 Waveband Shutter Cable.
Doing a bit of research, it seems that 42 SWG equates to 0.102mm.
The best I have been able to come up with so far from a U.K. supplier is Beadalon 7 Strand Stainless Steel Wire for Jewellery Making, 0.012" 30 feet for £2.98 delivered. You obviously can't solder stainless steel wire, but I guess you could crimp on a small ferrule...

Bike gear cable for Sturmey Archer hubs is about that size I think.
Brake cables are thicker. I think you could solder stainless with Laco flux or superglue? |

Have you looked in guitar shops, etc?
Some of the new high tensile plastics cords may do the job (i.e. Spectra). |

I mentioned them recently in this thread: https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/index.php (You might also get some suitable stranded stainless steel wire from a fishing tackle shop). Good luck with it.

Seconded on the fishing-tackle shop as a possible source: the stuff is used as 'tracer' wires on things like pike-lures (pike will bite through most things but stainless-steel wire usually defeats them).
