Default BBC Speaker - Constant sound

Hi there,
I have a BBC which I recently aquired which when I switch it on makes the familiar BBC low then high beep. Unfortunately these sounds do not then stop! They keep sounding until I turn the computer off.
All other functions of the computer are fine. Games run properly with the game sound heard albeit quietly alongside the constant beeps.
Any ideas as to the problem?

This is an odd one. Is there any evidence of modifications on the PCB. Also if it is fitted try removing IC99 near the keyboard connector this is the speech synthesizer.
