Fortunately it doesn't need a 3.5TV EHT supply, but gives the beam a kick on each revolution. The real technical problem seems to be not the acceleration voltages, but the beam steering magnet currents. There is a heck of a lot of energy stored in the magnetic fields, and all this has to go somewhere when a quench occurs. That is why they had thick busbars melting last year. I think they are planning to put in even thicker ones.
Incidentally, the acceleration uses many MW of RF which has to be carefully synchronised around the ring - transmitter engineering with knobs on! |
