EEVBLOG gone offline.
In case you were wondering.
As of approximately 21:13:00 04-04-2021 UTC there was a major outage at the datacenter in Odgen Utah where the EEVBlog servers are hosted. This outage was caused by a fire as a result of performing regular load testing of the emergency generators. Unfortunately due to the nature of the failure it may be some time before the EEVBlog website and forums are restored to normal operation. Thankfully we maintain several off-site backups of the entire EEVBlog infrastructure, as a result there is no need to worry about any loss of data. Also please be aware that due to this dave@eevblog.com is also not available, if you need to contact Dave directly please use his alternative email address eevblog@gmail.com It would appear there is a major problem with their methodology for testing, I have been involved in many tests of data-centres and have yet to set one on fire!!

Re: EEVBLOG gone offline.
It rather reminds me of an incident many years ago when a British telecommunications company were load-testing a generator that both powered the site and charged a substantial battery bank. The charger went awry and cooked a lot of new lead-acid gel cells. Someone wasn't happy.....

Updates: From Temp site.
2021-04-05 08:56:00 UTC - Current updates project that close to 90-95% of all hardware experienced zero damage. Electricians are working now to restore power to the Ogden Utah data center and are estimating power should return at approximately 3:00 pm MDT tomorrow. Which by my reckoning is 10pm BST

Re: EEVBLOG gone offline.
Seems the story has changed, it now says the city power had gone out and the generators failed doing the job they were supposed to do (not a test).
Also seems to eevblog forum servers were in the worst affected area of the building and won't be running anytime soon. Quote:

Re: EEVBLOG gone offline.
We had a small (i.e. not damaging to the building) fire at the place I used to work. The real post-fire problem was not the effects of heat but the fact that all the electronic equipment's ventilation fans had sucked the smoke in, which then coated the pcbs in something which needed to be laboriously cleaned off. Rescuing the equipment kept it out of use for weeks, and in some cases months.
Cheers, GJ

Re: EEVBLOG gone offline.
Another forum that I am on hosted somewhere in the US has been down for several days. Perhaps it is a casualty of the same power outage.

Re: EEVBLOG gone offline.
Today, I watched an EEVBlog on his newly acquired HM bench DMM. So he must have reorganised things?

Re: EEVBLOG gone offline.
I guess you haven't seen many recent videos, he's has moved back to the original office space that he actually owns, rather than paying rent for the larger office space he was using till some-point last year.
Anyway the eevblog forum seems to have returned. David |
